Hi!
I tried (for the first time) to split a couple of cards today an was amazed how easy it was. I do however have some questions: - Wouldn't a double backed card be substantially thicker and more noticable? - What should I use to glue the card back together? Thank you in advance:) |

I'm very tempted to answer you, but I'm wondering if this thread oughtn't be taken to the Banquet Room as it concerns methods.

If you make a thicker card, it would also serve as a great locator card but if you peel the face layer of the 3 layers only on card "A" off and the back layer only on card "B" you would end up being able to make a regular size (3 layer) double backer and a regular size double facer.
I posted you a link to a great ebook on another thread and Todd Lassens card Genii . there is also a Magic Makers "The Art Of Card Splitting" dvd which goes into details of several more specific gaffs ie acrobat cards... and Kevin Reylek http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/2496 has some straight to the point tips on splitting and a very clever effect to boot.

You will spend more money making them (DB cards) than if you just bought them. They will not look as good either. If your just excited you learned to strip cards but don't know what to do with your new talent I suggest picking up a copy of VDP or some of the TnR tricks that use this.

Aside from what I listed above I found this book invaluable http://www.lybrary.com/the-gaff-factory-......750.html everything you need to know about making professional DMT gaffs on the cheap. I am buying 1 - 2 pieces a month as I am on a very limited income but I am almost there. I don't find it expensive to make my own gaffs and I do get a real sence of acomplishment when I use a card that I made myself.

Splitting cards is cool.

Yes it is, I still have my first set of self made gaffs for John Bannon's Strangers Gallery as I did not like the bike gaffs that came with it as much.

If you want to hone your gaff-making skills, learn Tearable (Doc Eason). The gaffs are presented as old, beat up cards. Their last trick. No one expects then to look good. And you end up tearing them in half anyway!

I just scored a box (25sht) of DMT on eBay for 2.99. Even with shipping that's dirt cheap.
We'll see if it's better than Elmer's gluestick. |

Just a warning regarding DMT (and probably ANYTHING on ecan buy):
There is cheap - really cheap - DMT and there is more expensive DMT available. The expensive one (I use Seal/Bienfang Colormount) has a perfect bondage at a reasonable temperature. I once tried cheap DMT, ... the cards fell apart after a few times used. So good luck with your 2.99 DMT!

Kodak in 8x10"??

Quote from my ebook on DMT gaffing that I am going by " Kodak type 2 works but not as good. It has a bumpy toothed surface that makes it harder to trim and the adhesive tends to squeeze out the sides of the gaff. There's also a subtle tint to it that imparts a yellowish tinge you might not be happy with"

What is DMT mean?
I was reading all the posts hoping to find what type of glue to use? Thanks Best of luck Chuck |

DMT is dry mount tissue. If you're planning on going the glue route, I'd suggest rubber cement, regular glue sticks make the card super stiff, rubber cement will be a bit more flexible. DMT is easily the best route, but also the more expensive.

You might want to consider working with Marty Martini (martinismagic.com). He has a booklet on card splitting for 10.00, and if you call him, he also has a great DVD on it. Besides this, he makes trick cards for you, of any kind, VERY REASONABLY. Besides this, he is probably the most pleasant magic merchant you will deal with, and always gives you more than what you ordered.
Check out his website. Best wishes for your card creations, Scott |

Agree with Scott above. Marty is your man, great at his work and a gentleman to deal with. Recommended.

I'm finding out that using DMT as the middle layer produces a semi-transparent gaff. Any light behind it reveals the backside. That doesn't happen when you use rubber cement and leave the gray layer in the middle.

Doc, are you using 1 or 2 sheets of DMT in the center? My book says to use 2. Just wondering.
