Anyone got any tips on how to keep a tarantula gimmick in you pocket without the wax coming away from it. The last three gigs I have had to drop an effect using it because of this problem. I have thought about putting into a case but it is too fiddly to get out while working this way.

While I don't use it anymore as it's generally prone to breaking and it's easier to carry multiple hookups of regular IT, I did have a way to carry it safely.
I used stick the wax to the Tarantula and to put it in a large ish TT. The TT then went in my pocket in my TT holder (Made of Gaffer/Duct tape and cardboard - also doubles as a handy pocket divider). This way it won't get damaged, lose the wax or break the IT and you always know which way up it is. |

I keep mine right where I put it a half hour after buying it. I keep it there constantly and I've never had a problem with tangles:

I had mine attached to a big paper clip attached in the inner right pocket.

I generally stick the wax to the outside of the tarantula and keep it in my pocket. I don't keep it that way for hours on end so there's really no problems there. Where their would be a problem is if you put other objects into the same pocket. I only use it for doing the haunted deck on the floor anymore. I also had to modify it to keep the IT from snagging in the spool from time to time. It can be useful for a few tricks but most other effects I either use an ITR or just a length of IT.

I heard from a friend that anecdotal evidence is actually quite reliable. |

You shouldn't.
Get JoeJoe's Web Spinner, or, if you MUST have an electronic ITR, for god's sake buy the Spider Pen Pro. If every magician who bought that horrid piece of tech called the Tarantula sent it back to Yigal, he'd be piled under a mountain a mile high. Poor design, poor engineering, eats batteries like M&M's, tangles like crazy... ugh. Save your money.

I actually used my Tarantula a few times for school shows, as a close-up opener, first doing the old "George turns upside down" folding gag with a dollar bill, and then making the bill float from the floor back up to my hand. It went over great! However, then my Tarantula broke and I just couldn't fix it. Got no help from Penguin Magic, from whom I bought it. So now it's just languishing on a shelf somewhere. |

Love the tarantula. I keep mine in a harmonica case which has a foam cutout of proper size. I can carry the case in my bag or satchel and easily acces it when needed.
I carry a second as backup, because the string will break, it happens! Take the time to work with it and it will serve you well. |

Let's face it.... these thing are delicate to say the least so you have to protect them from themselves so to speak....
When I use it I carry it in and full size Altoids tin with a make-shift partition using the paper liner and double sided tape. Tape the paper liner to the inside bottom of the tin leaving about 1/4 or less of the box width for the "Tarantula's nest". This will keep things in place and mints from shifting the paper around in the box. I also dump the mints first and clean out the mint dust in the box created from the mints during the shipping process with a damp cloth and wipe off the paper liner as well. After you clean this dust out you will be surprised how clean and dust-free the box will stay inside from not getting bounced around as much as it did in shipping. So you'll have Altoids on the larger side of the box and the Tarantula on the other smaller side and covered over with the paper liner. You can if you choose, pad the Tarantula with some other tissue paper to keep it facing open-side-up the way you want it to be able to get it in place quickly. When I open up the tin to retrieve the Tarantula it appears as though I'm just getting a mint. If you fold the paper in the Altoid tin just right you can offer the spectator(s) a mint without them even knowing it's in there. You can use your thumb to keep the paper covering the Tarantula in place when offering the mint. Retrieve the Tarantula while you're in the process for folding the paper back into the tin and closing the lid. I keep a spare tin of Altoids for re-fills as well as back-up Tarantula in spare tin.... just in case the first one gets broken or thread gets twisted up. |

Had one for years, never used it. More wasted money IMO.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.
