Hi, All!
I've been an occasional lurker and received so much valuable vicarious feedback that it was about time that I finally kicked in and contributed. By trade, I'm a clinical psychologist/professor/program director who uses parlor illusions in the classroom. I pretend that it's to enhance learning fairly complex psychological principles (and I certainly hope it does), but in truth I simply enjoy it. What better joy than walking across campus with a straitjacket to do an escape in class while discussing the history of Thorazine and how it contributed to deinstitutioanlization? I started with magic, as most of us do, at a very early age and stuck with it ever since. I performed as a birthday party and small stage (mall openings, arts festivals, etc) with my mother the clown. It's odd how, when I tell my contemporaries that my mother was a clown, they think I'm kidding. No wonder I became a psychologist. I kept performing through college and, once I graduated, I found myself doing freebie shows at my children's classrooms. I've recently redoubled my magic practice and am thrilled to find an active community for discussion and feedback. Looking forward to it! -Tom

Hi Doc!
Enjoyed your "first post"! I'm retired from 40+years on the road performing in schools across the USA. (High Schools, Jr. Highs, Elementaries, Primaries. and Kindergarten thru Highs. --And, an occasional college. In the Highs, and Colleges as part of my "opening remarks", I usually mentioned that magic was 5% sleight of hand, 5% sensory illusion, 5% esoteric science principles, and 85% applied principles of psychology. (I never liked the "HI Boys and Girls, I'm Uncle Bozo and I'm here to fool you with my tricks!") During the program, I would perform examples of all "four" of the percentages. I found that this approach was a great help in getting and holding the attention of adolescents. Consequently, in later years, as high school curricula began to include "preliminary" college courses (like psychology) I was often invited to visit a psychology class. When time permitted, I did. I liked your use of the "Humane Restraint Company's device as you discussed deinstitutionalization!! On the road I often was booked in mental hospitals (once I had a hospital for the criminally insane!) I hope you enjoy associating with our motley crew! Welcome Dr. V.
Having a Mom who was a Clown must have been weird as a Kid. So interesting and you got to perform but not sure how to feel about it in front of cool friends. I look forward to your contributions. I'm just wondering how Dick Oslund managed to check out of the Mental Institutions. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I'll be doing my straitjacket routine for a class tonight, so the topic is rather timely.
@Dick: I like your introduction of percentages. I may have to incorporate something similar, as I can sense how that would break down the natural defensiveness many people may have with regard to seeing a magician. Last time I performed for a high school class, however, it wasn't a magic show. I was asked to speak to a class about professions in psychology. I was losing them fast and knew I had to do something to grab their attention. Also a hypnotherapist, I pulled my very limited stage routine with a very suggestible English teacher. @Tora: Turkish coffee is among my favorites! Thanks for the welcome and it's great to have another psych perspective. @Mary: It wasn't too bad; I learned quite a bit in the process. You are right, however, when we do a show for a child and it turns out that the birthday boy is the little brother of one of my more fetching classmates, it became embarassing. After several shows, many near misses (and one notable social collision), I decided that I too would don the facepaint and practiced magic incognito as Charlie T. Clown. I was actually able to raise my rates that way as well. -Tom
