Hi my name is Aaron and am from sunny Bradford in the UK and I have just got into walk around magic although I have loved magic and all the smoke and mirrors that go with the art for years. And I know some ppl are going to hate this but seeing Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed a few weeks ago it got me wanting to start doing my own magic at home. Now I can do a few card tricks but to me most of them a repetitive and I have built a routine with my Svengali deck and that ok for me but I see the stuff.
Criss the Mindfreak Angel was doing using itr and pulling coins out of his arm and rings out of his neck but with all the crap that is out there I don't wont to waste money now I have a few thing ( the gecko cameron francis twt Martini Magic Rising Cards Kinetica )now I got them from the reviews they got here ( real ppl not some one from the shop website ) now I ask what trick out there that give that big wow at the end with out spending the bank and wont give out after 3 goes. what is the best itr out there I am willing to spend the money on that what books and dvds out there that are good for me as a street magicians thanks for all the time to read this azzab scouse magicians |

I get the biggest "wow" from - don't laugh - the multiplying sponge bunnies.
Ringflight (I use Dusheks) always gets a great reaction. If you want a great reel, the Alpha reel is the ONLY way to go. Spend as much time as you can here on the forum, you'll learn more here than anywhere! My 2 cents, Jim |

Welcome, and don't be ashamed of your viewing tastes. In fact you have just proved a contention of mine-- which is that if Valentino's "Masked Magician" act gets more people interested in magic then its good for the art.
I don't mind it when he shows how his stage illusions work because most of them are his own creations. I get a bit more annoyed when he shows how fundamental props work, like thread BUT if you're in this long enough you learn that people have short memories and anything "exposed" can generally be recycled a few years later with just a minor spin on presentation. If you can ind a *good* magic shop in your area, the kind where working magicians hang out, then that's your best resource. They will know all of what is on the market and can suggest specific books and illusions to you based on where in your development you are and the kind of work you are doing. Although gimmicks and self-workers are a great place to start, and always useful as adjuncts, if you really want to get into magic then I'd recommend learning some true slight of hand. A little can go a long way. I frequently recommend the slight of hand book I started with in Junior Highschool-- Bill Tarr's "Now you see it, Now you don't". No matter what you do, if you don't have one, get a full length mirror. You should be able to buy a cheap one for about $15.00 (or the UK equivalent) in any bath shop. Magic is about what the audience sees and you need to see that to effectively practice.

Hi, and congratulations on your decision to expand your magic! As a coin magician, I can recommend a few things to you. The Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights DVD set was the DVD set that got Reed McClintock and Giacomo Bertini among others, started on the road to coin magic. This set is sold through L&L, and contains over 100 useful sleights that will improve your coin magic. If you are looking for walk around routines, the New York Coin Magic DVD series has 16 volumes and over 225 routines, many of the walk around variety. These are available at magic stores all over, and check out the special deal below my post. As mentioned earlier, Bobo is a great learning book if you want a book over a DVD, and some great routines in both Coinmagic and Roth's Expert Coin Magic good luck!!!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:
https://youtu.be/aFuAWCNEuOI?si=ZdDUNV8lUPWvtOcL $325 ppd USA (Shipping extra outside of USA). If interested, shoot me an email for ordering information at rubinsteindvm@aol.com |

You should definitely get Card College Volume 1. It's a must at starting magic. I even look back at the book from time to time to recap. Goodluck with it all! Check this topic to get started: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=41&51 It'll help with all the basic sleights that you'll need to do with most effects.

I wrote a blog a while back as a answer to this question, http://alzebediah.blogspot.co.nz/2011/07......rst.html
You mentioned using IT you might want to look into loops there easy to carry and I found sorted out some of the issues I had with a reel. Do look into all possibilities because what suite one magician might not suite the other. Also I use to live in London and I know Bradford a bit especially the Air field owned by the National museum of science and industry as I use to work at the science museum London. I don't know if you travel to London much but there are two great magic shops there, http://www.davenportsmagic.co.uk/ these chaps are great. There a lot of knowlage in this shop. It might take a while for them to warm up as they get a lot of time wasters http://www.internationalmagic.com/ I have had a lot of fun in this shop great guys. Also some real good tricks only avible to them. There lectures they host are great. The convention they have is a small to day world class event. If you go get a hotel close to the event so you can spend as much time as possible hanging out and meeting pepoel. Hope this helps take care and keep us informed
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

It's very visual, realatively easy, can be instantly reset & the reaction it gets from laymen is way out of proportion to it's difficulty. Salutations azzab,
Fantastic & key query. There was an effect that involved (and still does) floating a "mercury" tube in a test tube with a cork; it is called Wunderbar. The cork mysteriously pushes up and you then remove it and place it (as I do) in your ear. The oddity of this move is a real puzzlement and gets immediate attention. The entire 4 or 5 inches of tube and 'mercury-barfits so easily in your hanky jacket pocket, or in your vest pocket. The secret attachement that allows for an incredible levitation (light sensitive from behind performer) is dispelled by wearing a black vest, preferably; and rigged up in this way will amaze & daze your onlookers. So, get 'hooked' and give Steve Duschek's Wunderbar, if you haven't already become familar with this breathtaking, floating miracle. Cheers mate, Juno

I'd recommend the Card College DVDs (and books) and Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights. Also, any of the beginner DVDs from Ellusionist are good with a few exceptions.

And I forgot to mention Jay Sankey. Sleight of Hand with Cards, Revolutionarily Ambitious, Paper-clipped, and many more, are all great.
Bill Tarr's "Now You See It, Now You Don't" is one of my favorites that covers a lot of ground. But really, if you get Card College and Daryl's Encyclopedia you will be busy with that for a long time. |

There is no one single answer to many of your questions. For example, if you are trying to find the best 'unitasking' magic effect, I assume you mean one that depends on a gimmick for it's operation. Since there are so many such effects already on the market and new ones invented and released every year, then the real answer is, "The one which works best for you!" But then, that isn't really an answer to the true meaning of your question. I would say that a deck of cards and several basic sleights will take you very far and would be a less expensive and more satisfying way of pursuing your goal of learning magic, but then cards aren't for everyone or every audience. You also mention the Svengali Deck. This can be used for a variety of effects and is one of the best utility gaffed decks available. Spend some time learning how to use it and all the things it can do and you will probably find that you already have the effect/device which gives the biggest WOW factor without spending the bank. As to ITRs, there are simple non mechanical versions and high tech, electronic versions. I would recommend learning more about presentation before going down the ITR road and first getting some IT and experimenting with static lines before investing in an ITR. You should also consider ITLs since they have their advantages over ITRs. To each his own when it come down to which ITR or IT management system is best.

DON'T SPEND A PENNY until you have honestly answered these questions.....
Are you prepared to practice a little, medium, lot. If you answered 1, or 2, forget about coins for the mo and also expensive gimmicks or threads...these can come later. Do you want to learn LOADS of tricks quickly? If yes then don't buy expensive gimmicks like ring flight. Get a pack of cards, some elastic bands, a thumb tip and learn to use them. Get some self working tricks - these can be awesome. Ask how do you like to learn? I have Royal Road to Card Magic and Bobo's Modern coin magic....barely read either of them. Mark Wilson's Magic course (more pictures, better descriptions) and various other magic books I have read....neither books nor DVD's are the defacto answer. The WONDERFUL David Williamson wrote a book called Williamson's wonders...highly regarded....but I started doing his tricks when I saw the explanations on DVD. Look up some of the old guys....Karell Fox has a name for doing easy but powerful magic. Basically ask yourself who you are and what you are willing to commit and what rocks your boat.....and take it from there. Good luck and enjoy. Danny |

Great advise from the above-
Mark Wilson's Complete Complete Course in Magic. So many great routines from one of the true masters in magic. Broad range of topics and his routines are very good. That is where I learned his Cups and Balls routine and Sponge Ball Routine and I still use both (with minor adaptations for me) to this day. ...and yes, nothing in Magic is more powerful than those Sponge bunnies. You will learn sleights than will take you months to master but it all comes down to "can I see those bunnies again". get the 3d version from Goshman. Eddie Ace makes a beautiful set as well. |
