Sorry, I don't mean to sound angry. It can be hard to convey to tone in text. I am passionate about magic and doing it well.
I try not to perform material that isn't ready for anyone except my wife and my camera. I sincerely want to produce coins better. I want other magi to do so as well. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I am continuing my quest to create a good production. When I have one that looks magical I will share a video of it. |

What does that character want from the audience? What did the character bring to show the audience? What magical abilities/items to demonstrate does the character have and how does he use them? How can the audience know when the intended demonstration is complete? What does the character do with items that change state or wear out or vanish during his demonstrations? And thought it all... what is the character offering the audience that they'd care to attentively watch and in come cases even participate in the demonstrations?

Ditto on a director....
if possible someone who is more theatre than magic. There are a few that have knowledge of both. One character might find a coin in a non-peeled banana, while another might find it in a burst of fire. along JT's suggestions, does the character know or acknowledge the audience. Is he/she causing the magic, or a "victim" of it. perhaps he first wants a sandwhich and instead produces a ham sandwhich... a coin is needed for a vending machine coke. ... he / she gets some change after buying the coke, and turns the coins into a napkin... Harris still 2 old to know it all

When I said "create" earlier I did not mean that in the sense of come up with a new technique. I just meant create as in create it as part of my act for those watching. I have no delusion that I will invent something new in the realm of coin productions.

Subtext or non verbal cues to myself help.
I started using this back in the 70's when I did a show called Mime over Matter. Back in Reno, our house had towels, engraved with His....Hers ....and Mime. Harris

Gr8gorilla There are so many delusional poeple saying they create something "new" and selling it. A lot of vanishes are are repackeged and renamed and sold as the next best. If I see another coin in the bottle for sale I think my head will pop. So why not you at least you have a idea to fill in a gap where something is obiviously lacking. Never underestimate yourself. I think you have brought up a good point.

A lot of times bad magic comes from bad routiening.
They may have have good technique misdirection and timing. But their routiens are not well thought out and planned. Todd |

Gr8, I think you hit the issue with your first post. There really aren't a lot of productions that look 'magical' in and of themselves. Most productions are not magical. It is up to the performer to make it happen. The reason most magicians aren't good at it (and this is the honest truth, not trying to be offensive to anybody) is that most are not very good at it, or at least don't understand it fully. Magic=story telling. If you are not an engaging story teller you are probably not going to be an engaging magician.
Just to further my point, I feel like this reflects any medium of art, and can be clearly seen or demonstrated. Take for example (not my favorite but a good one) Jimi Hendrix. He did things with a guitar that people to this day can't 'replicate'. Even though millions and millions of people learn exactly the same songs and notes and chords that he did, for some reason it's not the same. Why do you think that is? I believe that people like Jimi were able to basically tell a story. To gain the trust and interest of the listener and take them on a journey. Anybody can reread the story, but it takes an exceptional skill to be able to transfer the feelings and emotions of the story onto the listener. Sorry if that was rambling. Been drinking and reading about theory. Hopefully it made some sense. |

Yes, an emotional hook can add.
I like folks like Dan Garrett who can do the licks, and also hook us with schtick. Connecting with our audiences is much more than practicing for hours in front of a mirror. In fact these days, I use the mirror less and less. Harris currently through the other side of the "glass" of your computer screen

I would never go so far as to say "most" are not good at it, or anything else. I have not seen most performers, I've only seen who I have seen. And I'm not talking about youtube. I've seen many very magical productions of coins from many fine magicians. Sure there are some bad ones, and sadly they feel they should share there stuff on youtube, but still, that's not "most" magicians.
Sorry, but I got turned off by the "most" word while reading a thirty dollar coin book I book a couple years ago that says, in the author's introduction, that most magic books have none worth doing. As I read thru the routines in that book I found nothing worth doing. Cablerock-- Good analogy with Hendrix and magic. |

Funny, once we hit upon someone that does something so exceptionally well, it is at that point that we seemingly/most times stop trying to be ourselves, and then begin trying our best to be someone else's best. I really believe that that sort of excellence is in us all deep down, if we just keep looking for it within. I'm just sayin'.

Is there a 'live' chat place for this kind of discussion? I have so many things to say but am having a very hard time articulating them all in message form, especially since there are so many posts and great thoughts about it. This subject deeply interests me, and I have thought about it for years.

Humbled to be getting such props for a sleight I discovered by accident one night playing with random ideas. Honored to see such good coin workers out there using the FLOP.
