Hi guys
My NFW has gimmick has reached its expiration date and I was thinking of getting a new opener, for the resturants I work at. the tricks that I have been looking at are: The Poker Test, Color Drop, or should I just stick with NFW. by the way if you all have any other suggestions I'd be more than happy to hear them. |

What would be your criteria for an opener? What does it need to accomplish? What's your personal style?

The openers that work for me
Flash by Chad Long Rubberband routine, CMH. I have a long rubberband opener with jokes. I have a long routine that I can end at anytime because it's so modular. Sponge balls you can open or close with. Extreme Burn. There are so many options, just choose one. |

Sorry PaulSharke I should have been more clear my criteria is to pack small play big, have little to no reset, and to have many moments of magic in it. what it needs to do is captivate the spectators after they see it. and my performance style is I'm the quirky, cheesy, sarcastic guy you always see at parties.
PS thankyou for the suggestions blindside and paul I will look in to them. |

I would suggest not being the "quirky, cheesy, sarcastic guy you always see at parties".
Then I would open with a chop cup.

I have been using "Poker Test" as an opener and it does well. It's quick, simple, resets instantly, is powerful, and gets their undivided attention.

A good opener I use is finger palming a small sponge ball and taking some flash paper, lighting it up and as it burns close to my hand, throwing the flash paper and sponge ball up into the air to make the sponge ball look like it just appeared out of the fire flash. It catches the table's attention and you can go straight into a sponge ball routine.

I also agree that Aces is a fantastic opener. It is visual, straight forward magic that involves the spectator.

I just got Ace as well. it is great. Definitely in my strolling and table hopping arsenal. However, in a restaurant setting, I prefer
Poker Test over Ace for an opener. It is a bit quicker and all the table has to do is watch (Oh, and answer some questions). As much as I love the idea of getting the spectators physically involved, I want to be sure I am welcome at the table first. In a strolling situation, I think either would do well and I'm not saying Ace could not be a great opener. But in a restaurant situation, I want to differentiate the "Show me" tables from the "not tonight" ones as quickly as possible. |

I think that in general, production effects are good as openers

I like to use a copper silver routine with a Morgan Dollar and a Penny. Walk up and ask, "Anyone have a penny?" If not, bring one out and hand it to a lady. "Here's my favorite, a solid silver dollar." Show it and go into the routine (finish, she thinks she has the dollar, but when she opns hnd it's a Jumbo Penny.

Sometimes I also open with copper silver routine, I like the version greg wilson teach on "on the spot", there are plenty of great material there that would be suitable as an opener

Comment: You walk up to a table and introduce yourself as a magician........If you, the magician, were a spectator and someone approached you as a magician, what would you expect to see?********* Someone pulling out playing cards or coins?......
I think a spectator's expectations are different then what we think a good opener would be. When first meeting a magician, I would want to experience something impossible or startling. Like Dimitri mentions above "a production effect". An appearance. Show your hands empty then "POW" "Where in the heck did that come from!!" People don't know us and I never engage people to use their hands initially. Establish yourself first as someone worthy of their time THEN go into your card and coins (interactive) routines.
Guilt will betray you before technique betrays you!

First - walk up to the table. Then tell them who you are and what you are doing there. Then hand them a trick to look at.
Chop cup - a ring - beads - a wand - whatever. Then do the trick. I hope this helps.

If you are already doing NFW, you will find ACE to be very similar.

Use your personality as an opener to break the ice and make sure they are enjoying there evening, after you've created a personal relationship and have everyone's names use something simple, visual that doesn't require too much concentration to warm them up. Personally, I use a 3 phase copper silver, Coins across, ending with a coin to watch, and my sponge ball routine.
Whatever tricks convey your personality the best are the ones you should use. As long as they like you, and understand what they are watching they will enjoy the show. -Chris |
