Recently here I've seen several threads talking about scams, in the form of someone contacting a magician and offering to pay them, such as this one here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=44
I grew up in the information age of technology, and use the internet every day, and I am well aware of all the internet scams and how to avoid them. That being said, I have to admit, I don't think I would have realized this was a scam until it was too late. So that got me thinking: What are some red flags that would make you delete an email or refuse the gig on the phone, etc. How can you protect yourself and learn to identify scams in this form? Obviously, anything that asks for your SSN, or bank account, but others? |

Don't book the gig (thus reserving the date) until you have 1/2 the payment (non-refundable) in your bank account. That's a good start.
Otherwise, research internet scams via Google and I think you'll find most take a limited number of forms. |

If an offer looms too good to be true it is.
Sound business practices will keep it from happening . Most people get stung out of greed. It is the easiest thing for them to prey upon.

I get fraudulent offers at least once a month, and they all smell like old fish.

To clarify, I'm not speaking of avoiding scams in general, but rather scams of this type, where someone tries to scam an entertainer.

Thanks Mindpro, I'm better now the medical procedures are finished and I'm healing nicely now and the drugs I was taking before the procedures that made me irritable are now discontinued

Here is the scan scenario. You get an email telling you that they want you to do their kids birthday party in Denver next month, and money is no object. Please give me a price for that show. You give them a price of several thousand dollars. Then you get a cashiers check for your fee plus $2,000. They tell you that it was a minor mistake, and you should return the extra money to them. The job never happens and 30 days later your bank informs you that the check was phoney and you owe them a refund. That my friend is how the entertainment scam works Danny Please stop bird dogging me. I'm an old man and I don't play school boy games.
