Hello again !
Im looking into card magic I would like to do it for a hobby/entertain family maybe a bit of street magic and I am looking to purchase my first book. id like some guidance on which would be the best first buy? Id ideally have liked to get Card College however that is quite pricey and if I cant figure out how to manage cards then I don't want to waste money The three I'm looking at are : Card College - Roberto Giobbi Royal Road to Card Magic - Hugard and Braue Mark Wilsons complete guide to magic The Magic Book - Hary Lorayne Which would you recommend? a main concern of mine is picture quality as I do prefer to see things in movement but I hear books are pretty much essential so id like easy to follow pictures. Any recommendations? Thanks |

Start with either Royal Road to card Magic , or the Magic Book by Harry Loraine Both books take you from the beginning to some very advanced sleights both books I believe have drawn illustrations but are done very well and clear to help understand the explanations that are being written but honestly you can't really go wrong with any of the 4 you're asking about.

Oh yeah I should also mention Expert at the Card Table by SW Erdnaise it's Kind of difficult to read at first it's turn of the century style English so you might find comprehension difficult at first but that book has a wealth of knowledge and has helped kick-start the careers of many top card guys. hope this helps.

I would suggest either The Magic Book or Mark Wilson's book, which is pretty affordable on Amazon. The good thing about both of these books is that they have a variety magic in them in addition to cards. I would also encourage you to check out Aldo Colombini's site. He has tons of card DVDs, books and tricks that use basic card skill. All of his products sell for $10 each.

Royal Road is a classic. I still have my copy all these years later and I still pop in and have a read from time to time.

Yarder welcome to the Café. Below is a link to a free summer book club. It is a chance to download at no cost some classic books of magic. It is very generously made available by the Conjuring Arts Center to the magic community. It is described in the Worker section on the Magic Café. This is just one of many examples of why the Magic Café is such a wonderful community to participate in.

The Magic Book is available as an ebook. Which should make it easier to get.

Mark Wilsons complete guide to magic is good if you are totally new. but really after awhile you probably won't use any material from that book. its a good book but I feel its okay to skip it entirely, its also pretty outdated

IMHO Card College is the textbook on card magic. I come back to them on a regular basis.
If you´re concerned about the price for all 5 volumes, consider purchasing them one by one. Lately Mr. Giobbi has published a pdf which covers quite a bit of the material of volume one. You can get it from him directly. A small donation is appreciated, but not necessary. |

If it is only cards you want and you're starting out I would say Royal Road is the best of the group.

I've had the best time going through the Card College series. It's such a tight course that is very well organized. It's a bit expensive, but once you dive in, you really realize how much you're getting, and it's definitely worth it. It's still constantly making me a better card magician.

Hey,
I like to say this, I think books are good if you have been into magic atleast a year. if you are just starting, dvds are much more better option to begin with, or any video, like youtube. you can see it live how the sleights are done, how you should act, how the magician does it, performance, etc. its much more easier to adapt everything, all the finger positions, grips, how it should look like, naturalness of sleight, etc. books are good when you have good amount of learnings behind and know the "basic tricks" and sleights, then you can get much more from books. books also have more material than dvd, that many prefer as better option, but seeing any sleight or a trick live is much more better way to really learn things. what I would recommend as alternative free option along dvds and books, go to youtube and check out the basic sleights or tricks, some free tricks, selfworking tricks to start with and other stuff. there are some good advices and tutorials, just look around many different user videos of same sleight or trick to get more complete picture. there are really great tutorials and bad ones aswell, but there are as much material as you could get from beginner book or dvd. If you see some sleight that is good, google or youtube the sleight and I'm sure you will find some information that helps you out. you can learn lots of stuff if you really want to learn it, not only from books or dvds but from everywhere, like from here. you can start with looking DL and CTRL tutorials and some self workings from youtube. youtube is way too underrated as beginers source to get wide look of basic information. robert giobbi has very good dvd card college series aswell, it really teaches some good fine details there too books are good, but don't just do it because its said to "be the right way", its known cliche among magicians to hype books. in reality, we all still favor when some trick comes with dvd than a4 paper sheet. living video is the best to begin with just my thoughts |

I think Youtube is a bad place for beginners as they will likely learn the moves wrong and have to later unlearn all the bad habits they picked up. If you want to just see performances by real magicians then Youtube can be fine (assuming a beginner knows whos a real magician and whos some hack), but to learn any moves on there is not recommended for beginners.

The quality of youtube tutorials varies alot. There are some users who have been into magic for long time, and then the "kid" ones. Ofcourse everyone should see when tutorial author performs the sleight, has he mastered the sleight to be able to teach it properly, and then decide should I learn it from him. And ofcourse these 1 fps dark room showing hands only -videos should be avoided.
But, I don't think youtube is even close to that bad once you find the right teachers. There are lots of good tutorials for beginners to widen their knowledge for free. If you want to become good, you should learn it from pros, and therefore seek for pros, no matter is he on youtube, dvd or in a book |
