What one, two or three escapes would you do
(and in what order) if you had: 0 assistants 6 foot deep, of stage room 10 minutes 50 people and a partridge & a pear tree?

A Siberian Chain type escape and a Straightjacket.
Both can be done solo, they look different enough so as not to be repetitious.

75 foot rope tie and straitjacket escape could work. Granted, the actual rope tying by the specs would take up most of the allotted time. Wouldn't leave much time for patter either.

Something small, something big, would make for the better show. Stuff in between.

I want to know more about the audience if they are jumped up little a-wholes I would escape from their company. Wouldn't be too amazing (well not for them) But wouldn't need to hear their BS if you know what I mean?
In truth ...... Kens variation on the Thom Horn belt. ........ Or ..... Something with a body bag with my nice line that 'sells' the air tight nature of the bag and hence the danger.thanks to Ian for making that a possibility as I am using his master combination that can have the no set to species choice! Thanks Ian! |

It is possible to do 8 to 10 minutes of close up escapology so the requirements are not that much of a push. It all depends on if "zero assistants" includes a ban on volunteers from the crowd... Lets up the stakes by saying yes...if so then I would do
The 'Stan Laurel' Strait Jacket Escape (no idea if there is an official name for when you put a DeVal or Viking Jacket on by yourself but consider it a reverse strip tease... you leave wearing more) A short story on Houdini using a pair of handcuffs with the key never leaving the view of the audience, and, An escape using a padlock made by either Mr McColl or Mr Hanzlik but maybe not in that order |

Thank you, collectively,
Now lets say you have an hour, under the same conditions. Do you build a show from a new list, excluding the last few you (collectively) listed or expand on that list? And what are they?

The listed escapes are all classics. The only one missing was an In/Out escape.
So if you're looking for a classic escape show with stuff you know will work then I'd say expand. If you're looking to create something more contemporary then my suggestion would be to start fresh. I like the idea of leaving the stage in the SJ rather than getting out of it. Not something I've ever seen done.

I think a few of the people here can do a 1 hour show of pure escapes. I could too.. but my audiences get bored and after the first couple already know I can get out. So I would probably throw in some magic along with. I know I am opening the door to attack by saying that, but it does work for me with my all ages audience. People leave my show with smiles, and many want to talk with me. I consider it a success.

So the reason I was asking Is:
I notice that people usually recommend suggestions from personal experience but basically include routines they are familiar with. So the flip side of the question is: Supposing that you have access to any number of routines that you admire but do not own... So then ... How would your answer change? (Note for Ian. I did have a final destination, in mind, when we all got in the car.)

Stop kicking the back of the seat or we'll strap you in your car-seat and see if you can escape
