As we approach the end of 2003, we realise that another fruitful year of magic has passed. This year has been bountiful with some great DVDs and magic effects being released. I must admit that some of the effects have been true gems and worthy to be included in every serious performer's repertoire.
This year we witness some of David Blaine's new magic specials, such as Vertigo, which brought magic to another level in terms of performance art. Undeniably, one will question what the future of magic is. Can one become a better magician with more new tricks, effects purchased from online magic stores, for that matter? With magic becoming increasingly commercialised, it is possible that magic no longer belongs to the realm of mere entertainment but has taken on an entirely new genre on its own with its esoteric technicalities and performance intricacies. It may be disheartening at times when people often view magic as just paltry entertainment and "another dumb card trick." However, it is important that no matter how often we get responses from laypeople which are far from that desired, that we ponder upon our performance technique and whether we manage to get out from the audience that spark of astonishment that is able to amaze them, regardless of whether it is only for a split second. Magic need not necessarily be treated too seriously; it is a tool to bring people together, to break down barriers between strangers and to transform the mundane into the extraordinary. To a large extent, we have too often lost our true objective of getting a magical infantile reaction out of our audience over unnecessary trivialities such as the usage of gaffs, technical moves(such as the pass, false deals) in order to impress. But this will be to no avail if we fail to recognise that it is the simplicity that provokes the best responses. With that said, let us look forward to another year of great magic inventions and discussions in this forum. Cheers! |

Unfortunatley, the biggest magic-related story of 2003 has to be the attack of Roy Horn and the closing of the Siegfried and Roy Show.
Here's hoping for a happier big magic story in 04. Eric. |
