I'm stunned there haven't been more posts about this upcoming set. My order is in. Sounds like a great set and layout.

Would any serious close-up worker benefit from these books?

Perhaps when people receive their's we might get a review or two. These are tempting but like you, I am primarily a close up magician and while I have a world of respect for Mike Caveney as a magician, writer, and publisher, this is one of those rare instances where I will wait and see before pulling the trigger on material from someone so respected in the art. I simply do not want to buy a two book set with one book that might not interest me. We'll see I guess! Best, Vlad |

Again though, there hasn't been any concrete feedback in terms of genre. I'm certain it's well produced and Mike Caveney's work is beyond reproach but it looks like the two volume set is split into close and stage. I wish I had the financial resources that would allow me to make the purchase but, I need to spend wisely and that means focusing on resources I can use in walkaround and street magic. Thanks for the opinion though! It does matter and I think many will buy this. Best, Vlad |

The "Wonders" book has little close-up from times when Caveney used to perform in trade shows. But nothing in real sense that would be called "street magic"
Most of the book is his parlour/stage magic he developed for his character. This material is extremely character driven and I cant think anyone doing most of it without some serious altering. Caveney gives everything though... Pattern, reasoning, what to use, what to learn from his mistakes, why and how and so on. Also worth noting, and that came as little supprise to me, is that Caveney could be compared to Tommy Wonder when it comes to his magic. Occassionally there is some SERIOUS gaffing going on and it is extremely hard to make some of the custom gaffs he is using. The other book has details mainly on illusions and routines he has presented in history of magic conventions. There is also perhaps the sneakiest egg bag routine ever invented in this book. The books look fabulous and contain everything I hoped for. That said, if you are looking for new material then tese books arent really for you. As I mentioned earlier, everyhing Caveney does is so character driven that you wont probably find anything here. However if you want to really get into professional head, understand why he does what he does and how he has got around the different problems this is an MUST BUY! So for Hobbyist, stay with ellusionist routines, for professionals who already have an act but would like an inside on how other pro's think, GET THIS Juha-Matti |

Like Vlad am I not into stage magic (yet).
At this point in my magic life, I am rarely looking into adding new effects to my repertoire. I am much, much more looking into great theory, philosophy, presentation etc. to become the best performer possible. Will this book help me in that area as a close-up worker? |

The material is geared mainly to stand-up/stage performer and so is most of the philosophy, character development, using scripts, pattern and lines and so on. There really isn't that many essays in the books. The content is more about; "This is the effect I imagined and this was the first way of doing it. However it had this and that problems so I kept working on it and changed this and that. But still it had these problems to solve... And so on" I am not saying that this woudnt help you as well, but there is just many better books that are written purely that in mind Juha-Matti |
