Hi All,
I was wondering how many of you perform the tossed out deck while strolling. I am adding this for larger events, primarily festivals, where there are many groups of people that do not necessarily interact with each other. Does anyone perform this in a setting where group members will end up talking to each other after the performance? I know that Bolter has a great solution in his New World Tossed Out Deck for smaller settings. I'm wondering who else is using this regularly. |

I try to gage the audience with stuff like that. (thinking along different lines) Depending on the people, I would not automatically hand something to acquainted groups that are not seated in rows.
With all the audience management skills anyone has it's still possible someone will take the rubber band off the deck and pretend to do a card trick, in an attempt to gain attention, for their friends. Maybe that's why a TOD works best by throwing it to people seated in rows of chairs and who are separate. I can imagine handing the deck to drunks at a round table (say at a reception) and they can stand up and walk away because there isn't a back row of people to block them in. For the same reasoning, I only like performing McCombs version of Himber Rings when the audience is seated in rows. I can just imagine showing the 3 rings to a cowboy at a banquet table and he snatches them - and runs away, as a joke. (and "something" opens and the rings go flying across the room). Maybe I appear overly cautious to some people or maybe I've been there before and have seen uncontrolled spectators act quietly until they see their chance to Steal The Spotlight - and they do.

I work many outdoor events and there are mostly families present. There are hardly ever drunks when I perform at events. I've also been working long enough to know how to deal with that type of situation. I know what works, what doen't, and how to handle those RARE events. I've really been thinking about the revelations and how to handle them. I will be taking a slower approach rather than a rapid fire reveal. I've also been thinking of how to make this a LOUD ending while people are standing hd can't sit down at the end of the effect. After thinking about it,I won't be performing it for close knit groups. I'll only use it whenI have large groups of random smaller groups.

It's not logical to do a tossed-out deck in a strolling situation. Do Osterlind's Radar Deck or something similar.

The strolling events that I do are usually larger in nature -festivals- I perform for many small groups throughout the dayand I typically gather larger crowds then do a busking style show. The events that I'm thinking of using it at are gigs ranging from 3-5 hours. The tossed out deck will definitely make sense in these venues. I won't be using it at smaller events where friends/families talk to each other after the show.
