Has anyone ever had someone who raises meat rabbits try to sell you one misrepresenting it's pedigree? This has happened to me twice. Recently, a guy advertised rabbit kits as being dwarf hybirds. Turns out the parents both were 12#+ which is not what I would call a dwarf hybrid, unless hybrid vigor is the cause. They don't seem to be able to understand that if you want a 4# dwarf the you want that to be the maximum size it will grow to, not the size at which you kill it and eat it. And, they don't seem to understand that a free cage or hutch will make up for the bum deal they are trying to make you. Nothing against meat producers on my part either. The question is, how do I find a breeder who is breeding dwarf rabbits that stay small?

Ask to see the parents.... and/or registration papers....
Also buy pedigree registered rabbits, they will have a tattoo in one ear with there registration number. I currently have 4 rabbits, 3 are Mini Rex (not pedigree) and one is a Flemish Giant (pedigree) I like the Mini Rex for there soft fur and personalities. Two of the are identical (names are Pete and Re-Pete) to the Flemish Giant (Blacky) White with ping eyes. I am sure you can all come up with ideas for two rabbits that are identical, and a third that same colors but 5 times the size.. |
