I am very sorry to hear this Cliff.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats |

Thanks for all the prayrs and support guys, (Thanks Ted, but I am home now and saw your offer too late)
We drove to Tuscon, just under 500 miles. I am working on a new book I think... I will call it "How to make an unpleasent drive miserable." We left at 11:00 am from Long Beach California. 1. Just short of Palm Springs (about 80 miles into the drive) the Air Conditioner quit on us. It was 108 degrees crossing the desert. We stopped at a gas station for ice and made cold packs from extra plastic zip lock bags. That helped a little. 2. While going through Palm Spirings we were hit with a small rock that made a nice big pair of cracks in the windshield. 3. It was good that I was driving, soon after that my wife broke her glasses. 4. Closer to Tucson we had to navigate a dust storm. I have done this before on the way to Vegsas, and it is not fun. Alos had to close the vents for it (no A.C.) 5. Just outside of Tucson there was what they call the Monsoon. A strong burst of rain that can produce flash flooding. After all that the funeral was quite beautiful. Very nice things were said in a very dignified way After the service we had a nice visit with local relatives. At least my wife and duaghter did. I was out in the blazing heat dealing with car fuses and watching a guy fix the windshield. (Actually in the shade was not too bad.) Then I drove to a highly recommended mechanic, who was honest and did not charge me for the diagnostic. He suggested the dealer was the one to fix the burned out A.C. Clutch, He also suggested it would cost well over $1,000. Spent most of the day yesterday at the dealership while my wife hung-out with her family. one piece of good news. The dealer knew about the problme from other cars and had exteded the warrenty so it cost me much less than expected! I just paid for valve cleaning and a re-charge of the A.C. We left at about 5 pm last night in a comfotable air conditioned car. 6. There was a whipping wind noise once we got on the freeway. Checked our windows, and no clue. Later we saw it was a piece of duct tape the window man had used to hold down a drying seal. 7. Soon after that there came a horrible and loud rattling noise. that sounded like a rock bouncing between the tire and the wheel well. It could have been anything. I pulled over on a pitch dark freeway, praying not to get hit by the truck I had recently passed, and waited a moment. I let the truck pass, and pulled out to see if the noise would have stopped. It was still there, but vanished abruptly with no sign of what it could have been. 8. My sister-in-law and her husband live 15 minutes from here. They were about 2 hours ahead of us leaving Tucson. They nicely texted us at about 1 A.M. about the 91 freeway being jammed up. How badly was it jammed? So badly that we diverted to a different route thanks to their warning us, and they got home about 10 minutes before we did. I am so glad to be home..... Now the real fun begins. anyone want to buy a severe fixer uper, in a one block housing track, surrounded by industrail parks, with neighbors who keep a junk yard on thier lawn?
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |

Cliff-
You know a trip has to be pretty awful if a funeral was the best part about it. Continued best wishes to you and your family. |

What a trip!
If you had to go through a dust storm here you should check your air filter too, they can get really clogged. I'm glad you made it home okay. Ted-
