This is a very old post, but just came across it now, and decided to leave a comment for any others who happen along as well. Regarding the original topic of this post before it took a turn - performing the Clatter Box and being hesitant whether to use it or not for fear of a child helper being laughed at or feeling bad etc - Everyone seems to kind of be missing the main point here - everyone acts like it's making a helper feel bad is unavoidable if you have them hold the prop while it falls apart. That's a pretty bizzare viewpoint to take. I would say it TOTALLY depends on the ROUTINE!! It's SIMPLE not to make a helper feel embarrassed or bad etc. There are COUNTLESS ways to do this, but one example is to use the premise that YOU, the performer, has built this box!! Why does it have to be an antique??? Do we not have enough imagination to come up with any other premise besides the original patter idea which accompanies the prop?????? How about if the PERFORMER built the box, and THAT'S why it's "special and precious" and why the perfomer asks the child to be careful with it. However, more importantly, the premise would be that it was due to the performer's unskilled construction why it falls apart (and doesn't work correctly in the first place, for that matter.). I often build a whole SHOW around the premise that all my stuff doesn't work properly. Magic tricks "fail" and I need the kids to help make them finally go right. Opens the door for all sorts of comical situations. I LOVE using the Tipping Table, where I start by bragging that I have built my magic table (along with numerous props), and point out how nice it looks standing there with a bunch of props on it. (Table is loaded with all sorts of things that LOOK fancy, but are designed to do nothing but take a fall off the table and hit the floor!). One of the props on it happens to be the Clatter Box. At that point in the routine, (after numerous other disasters have happened and things have broken or not worked properly), I ask a helper to go and fetch the SPECIAL BOX off the table - a box I spent MANY HOURS building!!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! When the helper picks it off the table and heads back to me, it unbalances the table and the table tips up and EVERYTHING falls off!! The helper doesn't feel bad or embarrassed - it's ALL ON ME!!! Just like everything else that has gone wrong up to this point, it is now clear that I was a FAILURE at building a table!! The helper along with everyone else laughs!! But the Show must go on, so we continue on with the Clatter Box. If I designed it correctly, the vanished silk should now be inside!! VOILA!!! Oops, wait, nothing there. Needs more help - bring up another helper to hold my MOST TREASURED WAND (break away wand). Wand breaks etc, FINALLY the helper opens the clatter box again and CRASH, it falls apart. No embarrassment, no humiliation, the HELPER is the FIRST ONE WHO LAUGHS!!!! The JOKE is ALL ON ME, yet it was the CHILD who was holding the box!!!
Now, was that really so difficult?? LOL There are obviously MANY different ploys and premises which could be used that would deflect any sense of embarrassment off the helper. Why does everyone assume that the only to play this trick is that whoever is holding the prop looks like a bad guy?? |

Just seen this.....
And I must add my opinion. Stay clear of Daytona Magic and especially Harry Allen. I've had issues with him on several occasions - and since then I refuse to do business with him. His attitude is beyond disgusting. |
