You always see a lot of threads and posts regarding best effects to learn for walk around. However I am hoping to do some Restaurant work next summer at the latest and would like to hear your opinions on the best effects to learn for Restaurant work. While some may overlap it seems to me that a lot of people are standing up that you approach when doing walk around where 99 percent of the people you are approaching in restaurants are sitting down. I have never worked in Restaurants so I am very interested in angles. I realize behind you is bad but I am curious about performing effects where you have seated people on your left and right sides. Issue or not an issue? What are your favorites? Thanks. Your opinions here at the Café are always respected and appreciated!

I think you're best best is to go out there and do some street magic, see what goes on smoothly and try to get people standing , sitting ,etc ....

I am considering looking for my first restaurant gig as well but unlike in the streets, where I want to attract people, I plan on trying ot keep things intimite in the restaurant so that I don't need to worry about the tables around us. My goal would be not to bother the other tables until the spectators react and then I get their attention. Anyways , with restaurant work, even if they get a glimpse from behind on what you do, have 8-9 effects with you per night and do something different for that other table. My advice, for what it's worth lol Smile

You need effects that reset instantly and are quick. You don't want to or may not want to do stuff in their hands like sponge balls cause there's food around.

You need effects folks will understand in a noisy environment. You need stuff for kids, you need to like kids. It's not about you, its about helping the wait staff. Work tables that have been waiting for there food. Work the folks that r waiting for tables.

Don't get in the way. Leave when the food comes. It's not about you.

It's not about you. You may think I've been drinking cause I keep saying it's not about you but it's not about you.

If you make it about you you will not be in the restaurant business for long.

Well, those are my tips. Some are up for debate, some are not. Can you guess which ONE is not up for debate?

PS: Sometimes you'll get free food but never ask for it.

About the only thing I could add to John's excellent advice is consider pocket space and pocket management. Nothing worse than a magician fumbling around in his bulging pockets for 2 minutes between each effect.
