Never dropped a shell, but have had mess ups because I did not check my equipment before going on.

Now all you have to do is work out a save, buy having a ball ready for just such a reoccurrence. As in bend down retrieve the shell and start rolling it between the finger. They will think they were seeing things.

Elliot, what kind of balls are you using? If they're wooden, then that's very normal. I suggest you to get any of these balls: Fakini, JL Mirage billiard ball, JieLi or Gorilla grip.

I never dropped a shell, but once gave a ball a slight toss in the air, lost it for a split second in a spotlight, and when it came down didn't land on my palm. It hit my wrist, then hit the floor and rolled offstage. I was not prepared with an extra ball, so had to finish that segment one ball short. (wood balls)

Hi RJH,
I'm using 2 inch Fakinis, and it was an outdoor performance, I was in the sun and my hands were sweating. It was on the final move when I was showing 8 balls that I dropped it

Fakini's are a dream to work with, but... yeah. Not very well suited to hot & wet conditions - no BB routine is. Even in cool environments, my hands tend to sweat quite a bit bc I'm pretty animated (understatement) onstage, so I've had my fair share of drops, too. I loved doing my routine so much, though, probably because I spent so much time on it, that it took nearly 12 years to "let it go" instead of risking the slips. In hindsight, I was probably doing the BB more for myself than the audience. It felt like a breakup. I felt so empty for the first few shows after ditching the BB. Then I'd come home from the road and there they were, looking at me. They could see it in my eyes. They knew I was cheating on them with other manipulations. I think I need therapy. What were we talking about?

That's funny, Tyler! I kind of understand the feeling... I gave up a great bunch of cigarette magic when I quit smoking years ago, both for close-up and stage manipulation. Billiard balls? I used to be kind of a monster with wooden balls... could work a 2 1/8" set that I made for myself. But as I got older, my hands seemed to be too dry for wood balls, so I switched to Fakini's. That made me feel like a cheater, but I got over it when I got a set of the eyeballs! I do them in Zombie character. Perhaps it wasn't about the balls after all. I just wanted to be a monster again! Ha!

I dropped the shell once. As I was fumbling with it (slippery hands) I knew I was going to loose it. So I tossed the ball in my other hand to an audience member . That directed attention to the ball flying into the audience. Picked my shell off the ground. Said "just making sure you were awake" and finished. I don't think that many people noticed the shell (per conversations after the performance). Misdirection. Wouldn't recommend doing that, but it worked that time.
