Hi, we are working on a magic review website with some people. We want to create a perfect review template. We have this so far,
Description of Effect Difficulty (1-10) Value For Money (1-10) (Very Subjective?) Detailed Review Overall Rating (1-10) Should the review template be different for stage illusions, mentalism, books, DVDs? What do you think? Please suggest. Thanks! |

Originality and proper crediting should be considered, imo.

And some kind of mini cv of the reviewer too...biases creep into all reviews, and it would be nice to know from what perspective the reviewer is coming from...
a carpenter reviewing a piece of glass-blowing might have a different view than another glass-blower...

Very much agree with the 'originality' thought. Perhaps do a comparison ie. this new item is an improvement over the original how or the original is best because...

I'd like to hear about the advantages of the. new effect over previous similar effects (other than the trick's ad blurbs). I'd also love to hear about the limitations the effect has. If I have to wear a 3 foot wire under my clothes to make a nickel vanish, I want to know about that.
Is the release a definite contribution to the field, or should it be a paragraph in a book. Is the trick overpriced? Many aren't. Many are. Is it a bargain for the loot? How's the build quality? Thanks for your efforts, keep us posted.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

I think it is important that you have purchased the products and not received them free from the creator or distributor. That can make a difference in the tenor of the review. (And it does all too often!)

Whether or not the reviews are based on real performances or not.

I think the Café is about the best place to go for reviews once you get to know who the players r.

I like to know alternative products that would be good replacements...sometimes there is a product that is superior, a kid puts out a one trick DvD based on the original adding one idea or more work that complicates the original.

I'm fairly sure all reviews need to contain the following statements...
* When I read the method I smiled/laughed to myself. * I thought, 'why didn't I think of that?' * This one effect is worth the price of the book/video/lecture * Just my 2 cents worth ...and if you're a friend of the creator you should also include... * This is the best/ground breaking/most original/jaw dropping effect ever created. :) |

I'd also like to see something about reset/workability. 1-10 could get subjective und unclear. Why not rate it 1-5 or 1-4? 1-4 could be best because you can't rate it a 3 to stay neutral. It is either terrible, bad, fair, or excellent on a scale of 1-4. Many professional surveys/tests use this format.
