Pulled off by the Tampa Bay Rays against the Dodgers. I think everyone but the runner and the third base coach knew where the ball was.

Amazin! I've never seen that play made before!
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I need to watch it more to understand what's going on. But how do they know there is not two or more balls if they don't know where it is?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

The only two who needed to know didn't. But the important thing is that the umpire did. That was cool.

However any umpire worth his salt would probably pick up on that, just like the umpire who picked up on the trick play.

The point is how do hey stop them from cheating if they can hide the ball: If they can hide the ball them a duplicate can pop up anywhere and they say that is the ball.

Jim Rice was talking about it on the Red Sox pregame show today. He said that the hidden ball trick is frowned upon and if you pull it off you can expect some "chin music" when you come up to bat.
Personally, I'd love to see someone pull off he hidden bat trick. Ron

In a sense, this really wasn't the classic hidden ball trick. No one tried to hide anything. They just took advantage of the fact that the base-runner and the third base coach weren't paying attention. The ball was still in play and had been openly tossed by the shortstop to the third basemen while the pitcher was still of the mound.

Yea it wasn't the classic Little League play you think of with the "Hidden Ball Trick". But it was still effective!

It's just one of those things, like the unexpected suicide squeeze, that makes baseball such a great game.

Never pulled it off that style in my little league days. But I did do it a half dozen times with great gusto.
And I did get beaned a couple of times for it. I must've had magic in my blood early because I'd essentially back palm the ball(for lack of a better term)between my glove and my leg. The runner would peak and see my glove empty and then step off. Can't believe Cassidy and I agree on something again. The little things are what really make baseball special to me. A well timed squeeze, a double steal, even a great bunt. Bsaeball needs more of that and less muscle bound rage roid home runs. |

Speaking of well timed stolen bases, I submit, for the fans here, the greatest stolen base in history.
2004, Game 4, ALCS. Dave Robert of the Sox pinch running. The stolen base that ran the Red Sox back into the ALCS and the greatest comeback in post season history. The Sox knew he was going. The Yankees knew he was going. Everyone in Fenway knew it. Everyone watching knew it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNnqbf2Vpv0 |
