Rodney,
With Paypal, you're paying a higher percentage...just so you can have the money instantly? I'd prefer to wait 24 hours and make more money.

Plus, there ARE fees with Paypal's debit mastcard. You might pay ATM fees for cash withdrawals. Also, you pay foreign transaction fees.

The paypal debit card has a daily transaction limit, plus a daily spending limit. Square deposits directly into your bank account.

Paypal DOES put holds on your account, I've had it done several times! You have to call in, verify your account, verify the transactions....it's very annoying. Square has never put a hold on my account. I've been with them for years and have never had a hold put on my account. They increased my limits automatically, something Paypal never did.

It's just apples and oranges, maybe there is no single best solution for everyone, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

@ dearwiswonne,

With all due Respect you do not know what you are talking about in regards to PayPal. I pay the same Percentage Fees as Square. There are NO Fees to use the Debit Card as it can be used as a Credit Card. PayPal has never put a HOLD on my Account. I have never had to call in and verify anything. And NO, there are NO Foreign Transaction FEES. I had Square for years and decided PayPal was way better for me.

Do your Research and then get back with me. I have a Business Account and I pay NO Monthly Charges for it and my Master Card is a Business Account.

@ Michael Messing I can pay my BILLS On-Line with My PayPal MasterCard and I do so every month. I do not know what you are referring to. I have NO problem using it to pay my Bills.

Rodney,

It is simple: neither my health insurance carrier nor my utility company accept credit nor debit cards for online payments. They only accept online payments from a checking or savings account. (I stated that above.)

You are mistaken about foreign transaction fees. I've had to pay them with PayPal before:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/marketing......untries=

You are also incorrect about the percentages charged. PayPal charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction (see this: https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees ) while Square charges 2.75% for a swiped transaction (see this: https://squareup.com/pricing ) Now, Square charges more if you have to manually input the charge rather than swiping and PayPal will reduce the fee if your monthly sales volume exceeds $3,000 per month.

Again, it really doesn't make a difference. If you prefer PayPal, then go with PayPal. If you prefer Square, go with Square.

+1 for Square. Took me a few trials of swiping the card to get 'the move' down, lol. I got square to help with CD sales. (I'm a musician just beginning to weave my love for magic into my gigs.) I think Square looks cool too.

In fairness, I've never used square but it does sound good. But I have no need for it because like Rodney,
I'm sold on Paypal. I've been with them forever and never had a problem.

Not sure he mentioned it, but with using the debit card you earn cash back rewards.
Not much but over time it does add up.

I sell a lot of stuff on ebay (non magic) and using paypal is a big plus. I save a ton of money on postage.
You just print out the shipping label, the discounted fee comes out of paypal, and you never go to the post
office for postage. I love it. Those using ebay to sell items should have paypal.

Rodney,
Please check your facts on foreign transaction fees. Paypal's own website says they charge foreign transaction fees on their debit cards. Are you getting around this somehow?

Also, are you not paying 2.9% + $.30/transaction? Their own website says that's what you pay. Checkout the links Michael posted above...very helpful!

Michael, thanks for the links, I had to re-check them myself, it's always good to remind yourself how your current solutions compare.

Tom, thanks for the heads up on shipping labels with Paypal. Any idea how those rates compare to click and ship, which is free on usps.com?

Perhaps I signed up when PayPal had a different Rate. I do only pay 2.75% and I only pay a .15 per Transaction Fee. They have stuck with this since I have had the PayPal Card Reader. And I DO NOT Pay for Foreign Transaction Fees. I do not know what is going on. I was one of the first ones to use the PayPal Card Reader and Debit Master Card and my Terms and Conditions have never changed.

I called PayPal and verified what I am Paying and I am correct to what is stated above.

I apologize if I offended anyone I just assumed everyone paid the same FEES. I wonder if PayPal has some how Grandfathered me in?

So Michael and Dearwiseone I am mistaken on what I wrote for New comers to PayPal.

Rodney, It does sound like you have a very good deal with them.

I don't have any problem with Paypal. I just prefer Square for in person credit card transactions. Now, I use PayPal all the time for online transactions, such as selling and buying used magic props. It's my preferred way to go for that.

Kevin, I guess I'm talking more about ebay than paypal. But in a way they are the same. I'm not sure that the ship rate is cheaper than Click & Ship online prices. It is discounted from regular postage oh. But the main thing is, if you selling on ebay, everything is right there together. It's tied in to paypal and I don't even have to sign in to paypal to pay for the ship label. The tracking numbers are auto sent to the buyer and posted on ebay instantly. You can also leave feedback all within a click.

But say you are doing BOR, can you use paypal by just taking down their card info and then imputting it later at your computer back home?

How would you know if there Card was GOOD and that is was NOT Maxed out?

Yes, you could do this but I believe that you might get burned a few times.

However, I would never ever give a person my Credit Card Number and have it written down. That is just Common Sense.

And what if you lost their Credit Card Number and someone else found it and started Charging it up on-line?

I think that you would be risking too much to go that route.

Well, what if I used one of those swipe machines? Those papers pretty much records the info I think.

Yes, that is what you need to do. Just Choose Square or PayPal and you will need a Smart Phone with Internet or access to Wi-Fi in order to process Credit Cards. If you input the Cards Manually the cost per Transaction is higher than just swiping the card.

I use paypal to collect deposits on about 90% of my shows each week. My client's use a link that I send them to submit the payment for the show. Works fine for me. My fiancee uses Square to collect payments for students at her Salsa class. The impression that I have is that Square is a more viable option for live transactions. However, for online...Paypal does fine for collecting deposits.

Keep in mind that you do need to be mindful about cash transfers from PP to your bank account. PP imposes a limit of $500 for transfers for me on moving money to my checking account per month. If my collections via PP exceed $500 I may have to consider Square. However, I also use PP for a number of online transactions so the money in PP doesn't always need to be transferred to my bank.
