Can anyone here suggest a book or a specific routine that is similar to the Out of This World effect. One where the spectator names red or black and seperates them by "intuition" . I have done Curry's original Out of this World for years. However I am looking for similar effects but one that photos could replace the cards. I want to show the face of each photo to the spectators and they choose one of to piles to place it in. At the end when the photos are flipped all in one pile have the same message written on the back. Same with the other pile.
Thanks in advance, London

Worlds Beyond is a book with dozens of various handlings and presentations for the OOTW plot. As far as using pictures, one of the most popular is Jim Critchlow's White Star, but there are several others out there.

I recently got 'The Stockholder' by Gregory Wilson (with contributions from others). Really a wealth of biz card stuff. Was able to get just the book (didn't need the gimmick) from Doc Eason Magic at a more than fair price.

Take a look at Bruce Bernstein's "Separation Anxiety". It's an excellent version and available for $25 from brucembernstein@sbcglobal.net

Thanks everyone for your input. I have found a few I am toying with. Some of the separation type effects I found require some sort of shuffle etc. I don't want to have to shuffle photos. Looking for something pretty straight forward. hold up one photo and they choose one of two piles to out it in. Continue that through all the photos and its done. I think White Star is the closest to what I am looking for.
Thanks again everyone .

London, Harry Lorayne has an OOTW effect using a fan of cards. It's really clever, fairly simple and a dynamic effect. Impromtu Out Of This World. Found in Classic Collection I and My Favorite Card Tricks. ONLY places I've found it explained. Now my go-to OOTW. Impromtu. You can even used a spectator's deck!
I hope HL pops in here and tells us more. One of those type of effects you search for for years! Then find it exists.

Atom3339: I have, and so many others have, mentioned my Impromptu Out of this World and my Out of this Universe many, many times. Of course, when I mention it or them, there are always the few who scream that I only plug my own stuff - so I try to back off a bit. Anyway, seems that many who ask for help in these areas don't really pay "proper" attention. Anyway... HL

Incidentally, you can use a spectator's deck with just about any of the thousands of effects/routines I've published over the decades. And, speaking of "decades" - the two items of mine mentioned above have been around for decades. Many do overlook the good stuff!! HL.

I read and tried a lot of existing routines, but, with the Lorayne routine, you borrow a deck, and just go for it and the best part is that the deck need not be complete. The spectator shuffles the pack and one of the VERY strong points of the routine is that you show how well the cards are mixed and since you don't go through the whole deck, there's a beautiful moment where for a second time, you show the remainder of the pack very well mixed as it was by the spectator. If they still want to scream, then they need to grow up, buy Best of Friends I, II, and III AND Apocalypse which are mammoth testimonials to your respect for other magicians' material; these screamers are spewing nothing more than nonsense on stilts. It's a funny thing with effects that proliferate. There are so many variations people can't focus on one. Always believing wow if this is this good there has to be something better. Let's go find it.
What percentage of a hobbiest time is spent looking for the next best thing as opposed to actually rehearsing and performing ? In other words is this the true definition of a hobbiest or would searching for the next best thing be more indicative of a collector? J |

Well some effects have their inherent problems which is why people seek out a better way to achieve the same effect. In this OOTW example, the setup and the endless dealing are the biggest problems with the effect which is why people try to eliminate or simplify those aspects.

Obviously it's subjective, but, Separation Anxiety truly is as clean as it reads and very direct. The second routine and specifically the denouement may not sit well with purists, but, in the context of this particular routine it makes sense. It's not a prediction which Harry Lorayne has stated weakens the effect and I agree. This is something completely different; if anything, this is more a mentalism experiment (the second routine) than a magic effect although OOTW itself is not really a card effect as far as looking like a card trick.
All of that said, neither Harry Loryane's Impromptu OOTW nor Bruce Bernstein's Separation Anxiety require endless dealing. Mr. Lorayne's effect really convinced me that NOT dealing the whole pack is a LOT stronger especially with the convincers built into the routine; you can really play these up. Bruce Bernstein's effect is as direct as it reads. Will everyone like the methodology? No, but that's not a slam on Separation Anxiety. Rather I would offer it's true of any methodology for a given effect. How many versions of Francis Carlyle's Homing Card are extant? How many approaches to Peter Kane's Jazz Aces are present in the literature. As Atom pointed out, we are always looking for refinements. Best, Vlad |
