This may sound like a trivial question, but its not. You know Teller of Penn and Teller. Are there any lone performers like Teller out there who do magic? A no speaking act. And, what kinds of acts would be possible? I ask this only because I'm hearing impaired.

There are many silent acts, though they usually have music playing. Manipulation of cards, coins, doves, candles... there are comedy acts that use visual humor with props, circumstances with the effects, and physical humor.
Look up Tom Mullica and his cigarette act, Lance Burton, Jeff McBride, to name a few. |

This sounds like it would be a good challenge to hone your skills over your patter. Like concentrated exercising.

Look up Café member Ron Jaxon, a professional magician who until recently was deaf. He regained his hearing with cochlear implants. But he'd already made his mark as an excellent performer.

Some of the best magic I have witnessed
was done silently. Todd |

I was once asked to perform a children's show for a hearing impaired audience. I was able to use most of my usual show with some changes. It required me to really work on presenting the show with non verbal cues as to my intentions and expectations. Obviously all of my verbal jokes no longer helped to move the performance along and I needed to indicate the humorous points through facial expressions and pantomime. I think with the right amount of work you can present most types of acts silently.

I have done several routines to people I have not shared any language with and things work very well. Also yes ther are lots of silent act but they usually use music to help project there act. I have seen a street act that builds his first edge with a complet silent act and no music.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
