Any ideas as to how I might create a lota gimmick that can be used in a clear container?
Specifically, I need to convert a clear soda bottle so that it produces a never-ending supply of 7-Up. (Maybe it helps that I'm working with clear liquid?) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Run a tube from your back between your shoulder blades, down your sleeve into the bottom of the bottle. Take a bow and as you bow the liquid will flow down the tube, through the bottle out the neck into whatever will receive the liquid.
I have never seen a clear lota bowl or jar. I don't think it would be possible, clear liquid or not. |

Clear liquid in a clear container won't show very far.
You may need to ask this in the "Secret Sessions". It seems details would be needed to describe the process. Good luck. -Mary Mowder |

Possible to make, yes, deceptive no.
I don't remember the name of it but the one that used to be done with a milk bottle that was hypnotized so it would not flow might be a better choice. The impression is not quite the same because they can see that the bottle is still full but it would stop flowing and could be easily made. I'd still go with a darker drink. -Mary Mowder |

There is an inherent problem with this idea. With a Lota Bowl, you are supposedly emptying the entire contents of the bowl each time you pour. With a clear bowl/bottle, the truth will be seen, and there will be no magic effect whatsoever. It will simply look as if you are pouring out part of the contents, several times.
The only real solution would be to think along the lines of Bill's advice, obtain the liquid from an external source. Then, the sheer volume of liquid (more than could ever have been contained in the bottle) would become a magic effect.

Two ideas, you may be able to combine a lota with a mirror glass to create the effect that you want. I am not sure how the automatic refilling of the bottle would look to the audience. It might tip the method. The second, and it may not be what you want, is to use a 7-UP can instead of a bottle and put the lota gimmick in the can.

The "Gizmo Glass" is essentially a "Lota Glass" in that a glass of milk or wine (etc.) keeps getting emptied by drinking, and then it refills itself visibly. Paul Romhany has a delightful routine in his Charlie Chaplin character for this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak1jlJjPRFo starts at 3:10
Spellbinder has directions for making a Gizmo Glass in his Dollar Store Magic section item 10 - Party Cup Magic.

The Gizmo Glass is cool, a very useful item. A clear lota itself is not a good idea, there are lota pots out there made from ceramic and clay which look a lot better than the standard aluminum.

You can also use the illusion of a flowing stream of clear "something" coming from a bottle with a twisted piece of clear plastic inside the container into which you are apparently pouring the liquid. The plastic bar has a tiny magnet on the end and the bottle has a cover of a thin steel washer glued to the top of the bottle. The washer can also have a piece of clear plastic glued over the center hole so nothing actually pours out of the bottle, thus preserving the illusion that the bottle "refills" itself after all this pouring is going on. The piece of clear plastic jumps to the steel washer, attracted by the magnet and then it twirls around creating the illusion of liquid coming out of the bottle. The bottom end of the plastic is attached to the inside of the container into which you are pouring the liquid and when you pull back on the bottle, the "liquid" just drops down into the container, ready for the next pick-up & "pour" illusion.

I made a clear orange juice pitcher in 2007 that half filled visibly as a part of a "magician makes breakfast" routine. In that little act, only performed for our local Ring 192, I had a jar of instant coffee unscrew itself, a spoon in a coffee cup that stirring itself, bread visibly filled an almost empty bread bag, etc. My pitcher was made using the mirror glass principle with a reservoir for the orange juice in the rear half. It was not a lota but was seen as empty then visibly became half full of orange juice when I released a valve at the bottom of the mirror. The effect looked good but the valve and its handle release took lots of adjustment and ample thick damping grease to seal well. I can imagine how a bottle mirror glass lota type vessel could be made if a plastic bottle could be cut so a mirror could be inserted. IMHO, most liquid tricks take too much messy set up to be practical for everyday performances.
