Mr. Schlutz,
I am a youth magician with multiple card effects, about half and half self working/requiring sleights. Lately I been trying to learn flourishes to spice up my routine. I've got several questions for you. 1. Do you use flourishes or do you use particular effects which already entertain enough that you don't need them? 2. What type of effects do you generally use, i.e. forces, "pick a card," visual(card to wallet, torn and restored)? 3. Have you ever used other types of close-up magic besides cards, such as sponge balls or coins? 4. And lastly, have you ever performed on stage or do you stick to close-up? Thanks, Roy.
Are you watching closely?

Roy,
I appreciate you taking the time to write you question. 1. I know flourishes are sometimes a heated debate among magicians. I personally don’t use them a lot but that does not mean I never do. There are couple examples where I find they enhance my magic. a. There is a routine in my book called otto Ace Finder where I produce the 4 Aces. The 2nd Ace I use the Long distance spinner. After I produce the 1st Ace. I bring my hand way up in the air and say the 2nd Ace is up here as I *snap*. On the *Snap* I shoot the card using the long distance spinner move. It is cool because from the spectator’s point of the view, the card comes out of nowhere. b. Another time I use a flourish is sometimes when I am asked to perform a trick. I will remove the deck and do a Cybil type cut and say I need to warm my hands up and finish with a card spring hand to hand. The reason I do that is because I feel it helps give me a little credibility so they can enjoy my opening trick vs having them burn me the whole time and wonder if I am any good. Strolling magicians are like a roaming Television and the spectator are the remote. You want them to stop on your channel. So sometimes I use the flourish to get them interested to see more. But some quick visual effect could achieve the same result. 2. Generally in a strolling environment I would use all the types you mentioned. a. Generally I will open 1 of 2 ways. With something that gets an immediate response like turning an object into something else or if it is a Formal table I will enter as a palm reader and sneak the magic on them! b. If I open with cards I will have a card fairly peeked. I use my pivotal peek move and do my Pulse Detection Routine. The reason I do this is because if I am opening with a card trick I haven’t established myself yet and this effect is hard to mess up so I can roll with the punches as needed. So a routine that is safe is best. c. Then I would do something that is engaging and visual. I do my insignia routine or something similiar. Name badge morphs into their signed card. Say what! d. If I know I have time I will sometimes do a more involve routine in which I would have a card force. But I don’t like to have more than one card forced in a set. e. And I end with a business card effect or on a cute note. Depends on the crowd. In my more serious walk around engagements I choose to do more mental magic. Where I will do Center tears, Mental Card magic and a lot of myself working stuff because it is hands off and kills the crowd that likes to enjoy a brain bashing. 3. Ofcourse! Sponge balls are SOOO strong. I never did them for the longest time but when starting working for Bar Mitzvahs and Women’s Golf Events I did sponge balls ALL THE TIME. And they always left a killer response. I am not much of a Coin guy although I finally found a coin effect I really like. So more to come. 4. I am mainly a close up performer and I have dabbled in the smaller stage venues but not the big stage. I am currently working on a parlor act but I want to cap the audience to less than 50. I just enjoyed interacting with the people I am performing for and I lose that with doing stage. Let me know if you want me to explain something further. Ryan |
