Anybody know any famous women mathematicians? I did a google search and only found some historical figures and I was looking to find a famous woman mathematician who is alive today and kinda well known. The reason why I am asking is because I am working on a comedy piece and was looking for something that was the opposite of Gene Simmons.

Well, I did not check Tommy's list, but certainly Grace Hopper needs to be on it, unless you only want living qualifiers...
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"

A somewhat amusing famous person and his opposite is Bill Gates and "Stagecoach" Mary Fields who was a slave in the 1800s and became a free soul and the first black woman who worked for the US Postal Service. I also wanted to have some modern day figures as well. Original my comedy piece was about how our nation is divided and the status of the American Dream, but now I put it into a more concise topic of "The Status of America." I am going to take this comedy piece and incorporate it into the presentation of my magic tricks. Quote:

I'll keep this one in mind if I can't find a living one then I will use Grace Hopper. I personally can't think of any living famous women mathematicians, so I might not have a choice but to use Grace Hopper as the opposite of Gene Simmons (Gene Simmons is an artist and I already have some scientists on the list for opposites so I decided to use a mathematician for this one). BTW, thank you! Edit: Looks like Grace Hopper is a good one to use after I googled her. I'll probably just go with using her as the opposite of Gene Simmons in this comedy piece. Many thanks!

I had this big reply all typed out with female mathematicians who are at or near the top of their field, but then I re-read the original post. However encouraging the list might be to young women who are aspiring mathematicians, no general audience is going to know who any of these women are.
Now that I re-read your post, you probably don't have the laser focus on to mathematician. I mean, a female physicist might do the trick, or maybe even a female chemist? Biologist? Sadly, I don't think there's such a woman who would be known to a random comedy/magic audience. But to be sure, there are a lot of different "opposites" when it comes to people. If you asked me, who's the opposite of Gene Simmons, I wouldn't necessarily say scientist. I wouldn't necessarily even say female. (That's not meant to be a joke about Simmons' sexuality. I'm saying that he might have a particularly striking opposite in the category of men.) I mean, Stephen Hawking is a pretty good opposite for Gene Simmons, gender similarity notwithstanding. |

So maybe someone super-reserved or suave? Someone who exudes poise and grace? |

I was thinking the same thing. Comedy doesn't work if you have to explain to the audience what the joke is, i.e., who these people are.

I agree with your assessment totally. Opposites don't necessarily have to be opposite gender or skin color. Could also be personality and how those people carry themselves. I put down as an opposite for Oprah Winfrey as Montel Williams. Not sure if that was a good opposite or not. Quote:

Which was why I was asking for famous women mathematicians, but I really can't think of any. Some of the older folks might know Grace Hopper, but she might not be well known to the younger generations either. I think a good opposite of President Obama is Sarah Palin. Edit: Don Draper definitely an opposite of Gene Simmons.

Marissa Ann Mayer (President and CEO of Yahoo!) is what some would regard as a mathematician (symbolic systems and computer science), and has been in the news in recent months. She may or may not fit your bill.

Sorry for the double reply above. Initially, I mis-read "Gene Simmons" as "Richard Simmons." Which makes me realize: Richard Simmons is about as opposite as Gene Simmons as one can get.
Go with that. End of thread. |

Now THAT'S actually funny, MobilityBundle. Easily recognizable famous people with the same last names who are complete opposites. A good tag-line might be, "Are these people related?" or "How did that happen?"

Thanks for the help, right now for the People chart and their opposites, I am going to go with Gene Simmons and Grace Hopper and then Richard Simmons with Don Draper. Is Don Draper a fictional charcter by the way? I looked him on wikipedia and I think it said he was a fictional character.

General-magician- Don't you see why Gene Simmons/Richard Simmons is funny while Gene Simmons/Grace Hopper won't even make any sense to most audiences? And yes, Don Draper is the fictional lead character on the Emmy Award winning series, "Mad Men." Why have you selected this character to make a contrast with if you don't even know who or what the character is? I'm sorry, but I just don't understand why you think what your writing is good comedy. It seems to me more like obscure references that won't exactly leave an audience rolling in the aisles. |

General-magician- Don't you see why Gene Simmons/Richard Simmons is funny while Gene Simmons/Grace Hopper won't even make any sense to most audiences? Ok, ok, ok! Gosh man! I really don't know much about Richard Simmons. Googled him and saw what he looked like. I remember maybe I saw him on TV once or twice, but I never watched this guy before. I don't know if what I am writing is good comedy, right now I am just trying to come up with famous people and their opposites, preferably something relating to the status of America. So, I will go with the Gene Simmons and Richard Simmons comparison. I personally don't know much about Richard Simmons but he looks like he is the opposite of Gene Simmons. I don't really keep up with whose famous you know! I know most people know all these famous and popular people, but I don't keep up with whose famous and cool! I am trying the best I can! When Richard Simmons was brought up, I thought the guy was referring to Gene Simmons, thinking that maybe that was Gene Simmons real name! I do know Gene Simmons though, like some of his music and watch his reality TV show. Don't know much about Richard Simmons except maybe I saw him on TV when I was a kid briefly one time, a long time ago. He looks like a crazy funny guy.

Right now, I have a recording of myself transcribed out talking about the Status of America and I have sepearated each sentence and wrote out my reactions, smart alek comments, heckled each line and heckled each line based on how I think various others that I know might heckle it. Probably have to replace some of what I got written with similes and metaphors as well and then write out which lines are setup lines and which ones are tag and punch lines. A buddy of mine who has done comedy is recommending that I do this chart associated with the topic I am writing the comedy piece on that has people, places, things, events and words along with the opposites of each. This some kind of technique used by Gene Perret, the chart and their opposites. I am also writing a free association with my topic for example if I was doing a comedy topic on the local news it would be something to the effect of weather guy, white teeth, perfect eyebrows, sensationalized, over the top production. Something to that effect. Not sure how this is going to be used to help make my comedy better as my buddy hasn't explained that to me yet.
