It is worth keeping in mind, of course, that when Tony Blair, an even finer orator in my view, addressed Parliament and brought in a thumping majority in favour of invading Iraq, illegally, millions of us took to the streets in protest. A majority of politicians does not represent a day to day mandate of the people: that is just rhetoric, as we know.
Why, if Parliament represented the popular mandate, the UK would bring back capital punishment. |

Alex Jones thinks everything you say is BS Bob.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I don't detect much of that, Tommy, do you really? I find it both educative and stimulating to hear the views of informed US members here, on both sides of the political spectrum.
BTW in my last post I meant 'public opinion' rather than popular mandate. |

I'd tend to agree with that, Bob.
My own view, currently trading at two cents, is that gibbering about chemical attacks, when over 100,000 have already died by conventional weapons, and millions more displaced, is so much cant. By ordering limited strikes, the message to Assad is that it's pretty much okay to go on with the way he's conducting government strategy, as long as the civilian population are being blown up or shot. No chemicals, though, you naughty man. |

Tomski-
Alex Jones, who Tommy follows and loves to cite as an authority, is a Texas based fringe conspiracy theorist and radio talk show personality who has a very loose grasp on reality. Quote:
He [Jones] has accused the U.S. government of being involved in the Oklahoma City bombing,[8] the September 11 attacks,[9] and the filming of fake Moon landings to hide NASA's secret technology[10] and the killing of "thousands of astronauts".[11] Rolling Stone covers his belief that government and big business have colluded to create a New World Order through "manufactured economic crises, sophisticated surveillance tech and—above all—inside-job terror attacks that fuel exploitable hysteria". So it would actually be an honor if Jones thought everything I said was BS. See: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/new......2?page=2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Jones |

Bob C- Yeah, I had a look at the link..... Joys of the Internet; total nutters get to make their own news. I remember when it was poorly typed xeroxes being handed out on street corners.
I was sort of assuming that Tommy was implying that he agreed with the fiction! Bob1- Yes. I wouldn't mind seeing Blue Helmets in there, but let the UK and the US steer clear. Amusing if France went ahead on their own, though... |

Nothing. He would abide by it. What he did today is a win/win situation. If a resolution is passed authorizing an attack, he gets what he feels is justified. If it isn't passed, he's nonetheless made his position known and deserves credit for having done gone to the people rather than acting unilaterally.
And I'm not sure that Congress is thrilled at the prospect of having to actually do something relevant for a change. To me, what will be interesting is what will happen if Assad launches yet another chemical attack prior to a Congressional resolution. I wonder if that would have an effect on how they would vote. |

I think Obama really regrets making that 'red line' comment and is looking for a way out. If he really wanted to attack Syria, he'd do it. I mean, why worry about Congress this time? He's hoping Congress will supply him with a get out of jail free card and vote this action down. How will the vote go? Not sure, but I'm guessing it doesn't pass.

That's interesting, rockwall. Syrian opposition leaders are expecting the same. As a matter of interest, do you have a sense of how your local representatives will vote?

But I don't see how a 'no' vote would be a "get out of jail free card," because a 'yes' vote would serve to back up the red-line ultimatum. And I believe that Obama really does want to launch a surgical strike against chemical weapons delivery and rocket sites. He is actually much more hawkish than many in his party and I think he truly believes it is the right thing to do. Note that many members of Congress were only demanding that Obama consult with them and stated that they didn't think a vote was needed. I think those members didn't want to have to commit one way or the other and would prefer to have stayed on the sidelines, leaving them free to criticize the President regardless of what decision he made. Now, though, it's in their laps. The debate will be interesting. I think the Senate will back a resolution, but the House is a toss-up, now that so many of the old neocons are gone. Keeping in mind that Libya was a NATO led operation, what instance of attacking a foreign nation were you referring to when you wrote "why worry about going to Congress this time?" |

Fair enough. It will be fascinating to see the result of a Congressional vote, not least for Syrians of either faction.

Alex Jones thinks is Bobs ad hominem arguments against him are not only invalid but that Bobs hypocrisy knows no bounds since Bob only said yesteday that there were too many ad hominem attacks on this forum.

Yea red line was dumb. Not ill advised it was outright dumb.
But to have the courage to do the right hing in the face of it is great. I am behind the president. Seems odd but good on him. Nothing good can come from intervention.
