Hi, is it possible to make a living playing poker online?

For a very small number of people, yes, no doubt. But how many do REALLY make their living out of it, it's hard to say. Far less than people think, IMHO.
Depends what you call "living" too, what standard. If, like Cag we have here, you want one Bentley for each day of the week, it's gonna be tough to do thru online Poker... |

It's possible to make a living gathering cans from the sidewalk too. Is it likely you can do it and live comfortably? Doubtful. How are the benefits and retirement plan? Inexistant.
It's possible to make a living with it for a few people. It's not a great career choice. |

Yes.
BUT, even those who are very good will tell you it's essentially an endless, depressing grind. Not a lot of excitement, and a ton of boredom. Don't forget, your aim (in extremely general terms) is to profit somewhere in the neighborhood of one big-bet per hour - you're a grinder. Frankly, most amateur players simply don't have the patience or the rigid self-discipline, and they repeatedly involve themselves in hands they have no business in. Online amateurs (wanting to be pros) often see themselves as Phil Ivey or ????, but they conveniently forget that those guys have already got a few million in the bank, and can play a very different style of poker than the common "grinder". Mitigating all of that is the fact that by the time you're into a game where "one big-bet per hour" actually amounts to something, you're also knee deep in the potential for any one of the dozen or so forms of collusion that are rampant in online poker...erasing any advantage you may have acquired through skill or experience. |

Anything may be possible in America but I don't know if it is on line.

The grind of looking at a screen for literally hours on end for thousands of hands would get to me.

Another one of the biggest challenges is the mental fortitude to withdraw profit. If you're playing, and coming out ahead, it takes a very special commitment to be able to take out $4000 a month (or whatever you choose for your lifestyle) and not reinvest/play it instead. Combine that with the couple of days it takes for the money to actually transfer to your bank (providing you with time to reconsider) and it can be too difficult to accomplish. A lot of players will think, "Hey, if I'm winning at $10/20, then I'll do well at $100/$200, too." The endless chase to make it to the next big level kills the ability to take home a "wage".
At least when I win at a home game- the money is actually in my pocket and I can buy something on my way home. Online is more like winning at a home game but when you open the door to leave it opens into a better game. It never ends until you break your bankroll. My 2 cents, jamie

Absolutely, bankroll management is probably the most important of all skills to become a successful pro. You can make money with less talent if you have proper bankroll management.
There are countless of examples of the opposite though, e.g. ****load of talent and no bankroll management, and those are the guys that are the most exciting to watch, I think. |

You absolutely can. One of my best friends did it for at least a year.
That being said, It was not a glorious thing. The bills were paid but he certainly didn't get rich. He played small stakes because that is what he could afford to bankroll. He routinely did at least 4 tables at a time, sometimes 6, and would play for 6-10 hours a day. Also, he spent tons of time reading almost any poker book he could get his hands on and being on poker forums. I don't know about you but that routine would drive me insane. Between the actual play and the study he had virtually zero time to do anything else but eat and sleep. More power to him but I'll just scoot to a casino once in a while and keep it a fun day instead of a job. |

On a serious note...people have been known to use multiple Poker-Bots and/or control multiple players at the same table.
This is obviously not fair and against the published rules.

Interestingly enough, my friend makes a living from online poker! He describes himself as a "professional" online poker player... However, I think that only a few have the talent, luck and necessary funds to maintain such a "prestigious" title...

Yes, "a few". Not that much different from real poker players though...
That said, luck has nothing to do with it. You can't make a living out of luck. |
