Are there any mentalism effects in performance today whose methods are still unknown (other than to the performer...)?

If you are talking about the exact specifics of method such as the manner, timing, and concealment of known principles, I would say the answer is, "Of course." There are many mentalists who routinely fool knowledgeable people through subtle adaptations of ancient effects and methods.
The real question, though, in mainstream magic and mentalism is why we have accumulated so many methods for effects which are still unknown. (other than by the performer, I presume...) Best Bob Cassidy |

The all-time classic in this category is David Berglas's version of "Any Card at Any Number". He displays a deck of cards, then asks the spectator to name a card and to name any number from 1 to 52. Mr Berglas then asks of the spectator wants to count from the top or the bottom, and the spectator replies. Then the spectator (not Mr Berglas) counts out the cards, and lo and behold, the named card is at the precise number the spectator named! Many mentalists have worked out ways of doing *variations* of this effect (there are several good ones in Barrie Richardson's "Theater of the Mind" and others) but they all involve the perfomer handling the deck and counting out the cards (and of course mentalists and cardicians can guess what he does to get the desired result). But the Berglas original remains a mystery. Recently I listened to Martin Breese's interview with Mr B from the 1970s (now available on CD), and the only thing he would say about the effect is that it "involves a lot of things".

I'm working on one that will fool everyone who sees it. Hopefully it will create a sensation. But then, isn't that what we all say?
