Thanks for the tip about Loctite.
When the fan fell apart, I saw the bolt on the floor and grabbed it. After the show was over, I started looking for the nut (very small). One of the other parents helped me search, and found it for me. Whew! I managed to re-assemble the fan at home tonight, but I'll need to glue the nut onto the end of the bolt. - Donald

I took each one and used the Loctite super glue and tightened the nut then put a drop of the glue onto the nut so it wouldn't fall apart on anybody. They ARE very confusing to put back together and it took me awhile to figure it out.

Here is my suggestion, which you are welcome to steal. Buy two fans. Remove the nut from one of them, so it is already in pieces. Fan yourself, then hand the fan to the kid. It breaks. Fix it for the kid. Then swap it out in your case for the fan in pieces. Hand this to the kid, and it will fall all over the floor in pieces. Remember Jack Hughes's Clatterbox? Same concept. There you go Tommy. You can sell two fans at a time, and I will give you a routine. It will be known as "Jolly Roger's Ridiculous Fan!!" JR

To JR -- a clatter box is a LOT easier to re-assemble, compared to a breakaway fan! I speak from experience. Also, one odd thing that happened yesterday when the breakaway fan fell onto the floor in pieces, is that the girl helping me tried to pick up the pieces with her toes... I haven't had a child do that with the pieces of the clatterbox before.

The point about the brand new Jolly Roger's Ridiculous fan is that, unlike the Clatter Box, it does not need to be re-assembled in the right order. It is just a bunch of broken pieces of fan. Also, if the child starts to pick them up with their hands, tell them to try doing that with their toes. I think we are really only something here, Donald!!! JR

Should the mistakes happen for the magician(me or you) or a volunteer, is an interesting choice.

This is the finish of my fan routine--but it must be "set up" during the routine. --and, the "standard" concept of breakaway props is not used.

If the mere fact that it falls apart was funny, we would simply have our props fall apart in our hands. Rather, it's the situation created by the item falling apart that's funny. The way I see it, when I hand an item to a child and it falls apart, the joke IS on me. I momentarily lose control of the situation at the hands of the child. It's like in a comedy when the ink pen accidentally squirts all over the nice shirt of an important person. The joke is not on that person, but rather the "hero" who could not control the ink pen. If it's perceived that the kid is the butt of the joke we are doing it wrong, IMO. |

I bought one of these from Danny Orleans at MagiFest. I have used it about 4 times. The screw broke during my show and rolled under a book shelf. Is this commen? Are they cheaply made? The material was also fraying.
Any help before I maybe buy another one. Thank you |
