Hey guys I know it sounds pathetic but I have been in magic for over 15 years now and have not learned one of the most basic magic tricks (Crazy Mans Handcuffs). I want to learn this and was wondering what resource is the best. I see that penguin has a download tuturial on it and I know Dan Harlan has some vids out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks! |

Even if you can find very good printed description I suggest you to buy a video for clarity. In my opinion Dan Harlan's "Magic with Rubber Bands" vol.1 is the best to learn the original routine and a nice follow-up.

My STRONG reccomendation is for "The Magic of Michael Ammar" You will learn CMH plus (page 238) plus some other VERY nice routines...Michael is a very good teacher as well as a performer. The book has been highly reviewed for years and I suggest that you learn the routine from there...plus its a tome you won't put down!

I say get a video of Dan Harlan's , a lot easier than Ammar's books. You do get more value from books but for rubberband effects video is far easier. Just my opinion though. Harlan's vid also has some other effects that compliment CMH.

The only issue I have with purchasing Dan's video is that I just want to learn that one effect. Most of my magic revolves around the pasteboard and I don't want to spend 40+ just to learn CMH - but I would rather the visual aspect rather then the book that is why I was tempted with the Penguin magic instant download for $6. Was wondering if it was any good though.

I learned it from the Penguin tutorial. Not a bad resource for the single effect.

I also learned it from the Penguin instant download. I had to watch it many times to learn the moves, but I think I'm a little spatially challenged -- especially when it comes to rubber bands. That said, I eventually figured it out, and after plenty of practice (while watching TV, sitting at stoplights, etc.), I can now pull it off without a hitch. People really seem to like the effect.

Actually I think that effect is more suitable for kids. Kids love it but when I show it to adults, they always say..'oh you must have did something with your fingers' even though they are not sure what I did or see the sleight being done. I guess its their way of rationalising the situation as they 'refuse' to be fooled by mere rubberbands. =)

I also think you should learn it from " The Magic of Michael Ammar". It is a great book and the description of this effect in extremely good and detailed. However, I have yet to look at the Dan Harlan series.
Just my $0.02, Alex

I learned CMH from Ammar's book and later picked up a copy of Slydini's handling. I really enjoyed the Slydini work even though I already knew the method. He explained every move in depth and shared his patter along with the thought processes and attitude that should go into each and every move.
I also think you should think about Harlan's dvd just because it is fun to do a couple of things while you have the bands out. |

In my humble opinion, use the Ammar's either the stand alone manuscript or hid book. I wish all magic documentation was written so well and so in depth.
