Hi guys, my friends from Paralabs have just released a new book called 'Do Not Disturb – Thoughts on Heckling'
Looks really interesting and I look forward to read it!! Here is the blurb: This book provides thoughts, experiences, insights and advice on managing heckling in mentalism and magic performances on nearly 300 pages. Apart from our own deliberations in the first half of the book, we could engage twenty-three well-known performers to share their experiences in being heckled and also how they usually deal with the problem. You'll find brilliant stories, anecdotes and insights by Jon Allen, Banachek, David Berglas, Dr. Bill, Bob Cassidy, Paul Daniels, Jan Forster, Nicolai Friedrich, Paul Harris, Whit Haydn, Axel Hecklau, Thomas Heine, Christian Knudsen, Dr. Todd Landman, Simon Lovell, Max Maven, Rainer Mees, Richard Osterlind, Neal Scryer, Florian Severin, Jim Sisti, David Thiel, Paul Vigil, Michael Vincent and Richard Webster. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eugene Burger wrote about our ‘Thoughts on Heckling’ book: "... a really wonderful book. More than that: it is, I think, an important book that will be helpful not only for amateurs but also for many professional performers. ... This is an important book because the authors, Rainer Mees and Thomas Heine, have approached disturbances during a performance with intelligence and clear thinking. ... Be prepared for an exciting journey!"

I personally don't get heckled too much (don't mean to brag), but if I save some extra money than I might buy it.
Also a bit dissapointed that Peter Turner isn't involved, heard he has some really good thoughts on the subject
Reader discretion is advised.

More on this:
"Thoughts, experiences, insights and advice on managing heckling in mentalism and magic performances. Advice that will open your eyes before you fall flat on your face. And even if you stumble we’ll help you to get an idea of the possible reasons behind it in order to stop it from happening again." |

And those thoughts in turn were based on many years of practical experiences before. Now, it was about two years ago when we started to make a book from this lecture concept. And during our work on the manuscript we talked with several highly experienced colleagues from all over the world and we realized that all of them had brilliant stories and anecdotes from their own careers. There were stories that made us cry laughing and anecdotes that made us think – but all of them comprised lessons learned and wisdom of priceless value. We realized that their experiences would make invaluable additions to our work, so we asked them. At this point (about two years ago) we simply didn't know Peter! If we would work on the subject of heckling today, you can take it for granted that we would have approached him. And knowing Peter today, I'm very sure that he would have provided a brilliant contribution to the compendium. That said, I think that the contents and contributions of the book as it is are worthwhile even without Peter's unquestionable insights. By the way: You will find a free pdf excerpt of about 40 or so pages at http://www.paralabs.org/basket so that you can get an idea of the contents and premises of the book. Cheers Th. |

I don't know of ANY professional who's never had to deal with it. It shouldn't happen often if you can effectively control an audience. But when it does, it pays to be prepared. In fact, you can tell who's been in the business for any length of time by seeing how they handle heckling and other disturbances. (Some of my best shows, in fact, have been those where I had to deal with a loudmouth drunk. They never seem to realize that I'm the one with the microphone.) |

It's an art in itself to deal with hecklers. Sometimes verbal judo is the best choice, sometimes it's verbal karate as explains George J. Thompson in his fascinating book "Verbal Judo - The gentle art of persuasion". All hecklers are not to be considered as ennemies.
This book from Paralabs seems to be very interesting with so many experienced professionnals. Nice idea. |

And apart from this we can take for granted that an effective, uninterrupted performance depends less on the quality of the reaction to any heckling anyway – but more on a well thought-through, individual preparation and a confident performance! So we deal with the topic of prevention in depth in advance before we dedicate our deliberations to proper reactions on disturbances and genuine heckling. But there is another point that is of importance in this context as well: While most people have a pretty clear understanding of the meaning of the word ‘disturbance’ the perception of ‘heckling’ is very subjective by experience. It is only through the perceptions and interpretation of the persons concerned that any given comment or behavior from a member of the audience or a participant can be defined as a disruption or conflict or genuine heckling. So it's YOUR perception and interpretation that is of importance in the first instance. So what one performer may find extremely annoying and interpret as genuine heckling could be something that isn’t even worth a blink for another performer. One should think about his subjective perception. We discuss this topic in depth as well. Cheers Th. |

I do agree on all points.
Between black and white there is an infinite variety of grey. But some people perceive only black and white. You're good or bad, that's all. From my point of view, the first step is to evaluate our sensibility to interaction with our public and the way we interprete a reaction from a spectator. Where do I put the limit, understanding that it's not THE limit but MY limit ? That's not a problem to have a personnal limit but it's a necessitiy to evaluate it and asking ourself : "Can I move this limit for more flexibility or at the opposite more self-respect ?" So many things to say on this topic. I whish you success with this book and I hope that people who would need to read it will be those who will buy it. It's not always the case... |

I just got my copy and it is wonderful! I couldn't put it down. Typical Para Labs excellence.
What was stunning to me was to see how everyone was in the same mindset when talking about audiences. |

LOL!
But where's the fun in that? Some have said my approach to hecklers is rather harsh, but it's important to emphasize that I generally just ignore them until I sense that the audience is also annoyed with them. It's important to have the audience on your side BEFORE you flatten someone. Often, a heckler will make a remark that the whole audience didn't even hear. To respond at that point could result in alienating them. The worst hecklers I've had, believe it or not, have been drunk magicians who've wandered into my shows at the Magic Castle. I give them no quarter. (!) |

Well that clears me because, as you know, when I drink, I don't heckle ... I sing!

Right, Mark!
A smooth, spontaneous and appropriate (!) reaction to something that we didn’t expect offers even an opportunity to genuinely interact better than we had planned. There have been many times when we have found some of the most wonderful, exciting and memorable moments arise from this unplanned spontaneity and relaxed interaction. Nevertheless we think that appropriateness in 'funny' reactions on potential hecklers is of major importance ... otherwise things may continue to deteriorate, - perhaps with the audience tending to support the heckler and in this case we would have a fairly substantial problem. Cheers Th. |
