I am trying not to be envious of those who can attend. I am consoling myself with the possibility that Todd will be informing his faithful blog readers on his new collaborations and inventions shortly after the convention.
Bowers makes a good point, but I think I still would have gone if I had enough notice. |

Anyone from NorCal up for a carpool?
I've seen a lot of news stories about the flooding in Colorado. I hope everyone there is safe and sound. |

I actually live in Loveland, one of the worst hit Cities. A quick geography lesson. The Colorado front range has a lot of cities and towns that are located right at the foot of the Rockies. They stretch from Colorado Springs north all the way to Fort Collins. the runoff from rain and snow in the Rockies comes down into 5 major river systems. The Arkansas which runs through Pueblo. The south Platte which runs through Denver. Farther North, the Saint Vrain runs through Longmont. The big Thompson runs through Loveland. And then the Cache la Poudre runs through Fort Collins. All of these rivers rose dangerously high over the past few days. but the 3 to the north, the St. vrain, Big Thompson, and Poudre, reached epic flood proportions. Each of these rivers runs through pretty much the center of their respective towns. Most of the time, these are nothing more than small creeks, maybe 30 feet wide and a foot or two deep. This past weekend, they were anywhere from 100 yards to a quarter mile wide and 8 to 12 feet deep. All 3 towns were effectively cut in half.
Only this morning has the water receded enough to re open some of the bridges. but much of the south half of town is under 2 to 3 feet of standing water. I almost daily ride a bike path along the big Thompson for exercise. It runs along the bank about 12 feet above the water. this morning, when I was finally able to drive by, the path was under about 4 feet of rushing water and the river was out of its banks at least 30 yards on either side. And this was after it had receded. I know because the street on which I was driving had 6 inch mud drifts on it. |
