I Kohler's grand magical gesture which also gets things out of the way nicely. Not what I'd like to use as magical gesture but it sure works well for Bob.

The puzzling fuss over tugging or clinking followed by a "swift" action followed by insufficient "accounting for the magic" and a revelation that what was suspicious has proved to be factious is amusing. Post hoc ergo proctor hoc in action. A clear distinction between the performer's mundane and magical efforts is a good start on this problem. Having a character with OCD, who fidgets and does handwashing gestures, is not a bad idea. Not sure it's the best idea one can have though.

Jon,
Not unlike you, it seems, I have no inclination for handwashing or hand massaging, which in my eyes also look too heavily like magicians' contrieved gesture. This being said if you take the trouble to put Bob Kohler's Clean Up in practice in front of a mirror to give it justice, you'll see that it doesn't look in the least like magician's handwashing or hand massaging and this is why sometimes (according to the audience reaction following the vanish or magical teleportation) I indulge in it silently and casually to lighten up what John Ramsay was calling the Blind Spot.

Now the Six Legs Spider, as explained, doesn't require it. What acounts for the magic in it is the Pause followed by the right palm down hand opening outstretched: this really marks the magical moment. Maybe I should have underlined that better in the description... or am I misreading your post?

For the ones not familair with latin sentences, Post hoc, ergo propter hoc ("following this, therefore because of this") is a sophism which consist in considering as a cause what was only preceding.

If you're presenting an empty hand, and just before shown a strange/tense/sudden/unmotivated action aimed at that now empty hand then you've kinda wasted the pixie dust you used to transport the coin out of your hand since they are very likely thinking there was most likely something less than honest about when you put the coin into your hand. Post hoc (then he showed an empty hand) ergo propter hoc therefore (that rushed, studied, tense fingered/cramped hand, unmotivated) transfer action was why. If you want to test for other conditions of causality - agency (your hands) , proximity (that moment of transfer) and lack of other compelling evidence support the claim for most purposes - you did something and it's evident what that something was.

At least one of this generation's writers has described the importance of separating the means used and the revelation of the results in space, time (and hopefully context frame).

I don't rememeber if someone has mentionned the following idea but it is a very powerful one.

1 - The coin is on the open LEFT hand
2 - Take the coin at the RIGHT fingertip and say "Do you know why this coin puzzles me?"
3 - Put bake the coin in the open LEFT hand
4 - Pause
5 - Close the LEFT hand on the coin
6 - Open the LEFT hand and say "It's because it's a very old coin"
7 - Take the coin at the RIGHT fingertip and say "1900. Even my grandfather was not born"
8 - False tranfer of the coin while "putting" it in the LEFT hand while looking at the spectator. The LEFT HAND is not really closed (half closed only but the spectators can't see the inside of the RIGHT hand)
9 - Pause
10 - Look at the LEFT hand and close it quickly and with sound
11 - Rotate the closed LEFT HAND "palm down"
12 - Pause
13 - Shake the LEFT HAND only once
14 - Pause and say "What puzzles me is why old things tend ...
15 - Open the empty LEFT HAND and say "... to disappear caught by the time"

What is powerfull in this little sequence is the fact that the coin BEGINS in the LEFT hand and it is like a "persistant" picture in the spectator's mind.
When, at the end, you shown your LEFT hand empty (MT ;-)), People remember seeing it in the LEFT hand an instant before. It's a way to disconnect a little the RIGHT hand in the vanish process

Excuse me for any errors in the script because I'm french and english is not very easy for me (but it is not very difficult too even if I make a lot of errors).

I like that your script ends with the coin gone. Finding ways to make that work with a few more coins (repeat) is a worthwhile challenge.

Sounds great. Why don't you get started on that right away.

Al, that's one of the reasons I did undergraduate work in psychology. Experimental design was a course. Working with theater and film students was also a great help.

For JT's multiple coin vanishes...perhaps change the line to disappear/"vanish into the hands of time"

I am going to try and put your little sequence on a clip. When I get around to making the clips I talked about. And, and, your little sequence does some of the things I was planning in using in my "new" little sequence. You got ahead of me.

John, can you show us what you are talking about instead of just talking about it? And please don't tell me that you can't do it due to some physical limitation. I am 70. I have broken both hands in several places during my practice of karate over the last 40 years. I also have constant arthiritis attacks in both hand. Trigger finger can be really bad. It doesn't stop me. I think the magic stuff is a better treatment than medication.

I like it a lot but it doesn't sound great in french.

In fact, the little sequence was the first one (the intro) of a 3 coins vanish sequence.

The inspiration for my script was Nate Leipzig's script "right there" from Dai Vernon's tribute to Nate Leipzig even if the script is very different.

I think your handling of the sequence is sound. It has one feature that I tend not to use but should. The routine closes the hand around the object for real in the beginning of the sequence. My perception is that, that is training the audience for when it will be used again to do the main move. I had come up with a similiar line that was, "I found this valuable coin. I decided to hold it tightly so it would not get away."

Thanks for that.

Another strong point, next to the one you mention, is the fact that the spectators are conditioned to see the left hand actually closing over the coin before it's taken by the right hand for a good reason (talking about the date) before it is allegedly transferred back ... delaying the closing of the hand. This is closely following one of Al's theories on an old feint too often neglected. What's strong here is that you justify it in a very natural way.

I may be a little shy in the use of the verb "puzzle" which is something many of us tend to separate magic from. You may want to try something like "Do you know why this coin amazes me" or "Do you know what's unblievable with this coin?" or "Do you know what's outstanding with this coin?"(or something comparable) to take aside any reference (even a distant one) to the word "puzzle"

I don't use the word "puzzle" because I do this little sequence in french. I use the french sentence "ce qui m'intrigue".
