I come into the Café, start reading new messages, and at some point find a longer thread with new messages -- by the time I read all those messages and back out to the index, enough time has elapsed that now all the cups are white and I have no idea which topics now have new stuff.
I run into this problem almost every day. Is there any way to extend the time you use to gauge a "new visit?" It seems like you could extend it to at least an hour -- maybe even a couple hours and you'd only affect the people that never leave. Is there a good solution, other than "read faster!"? Jay

I changed my mind -- I've decided the whole coffee cup thing is broken because what you say it is doesn't happen. I logged in, saw a topic with a red cup, logged out and closed my browser window. That ended my visit. I opened a new browser window, logged in to the Café, and that topic still showed a red cup (and no, nobody new had posted between visits).
What should* happen -- coffee cups are red when there are new posts in a topic. Coffee cup STAYS red until I enter that topic. I can set a cup to white by entering that thread or by choosing the "Set Topic as Read" link (no, that link doesn't exist but it could). By switching to a system like that I can come in and read the new posts in one section of the Café, go eat dinner or run an errand, and then come back and finish reading the things I hadn't been able to get to yet. There's no "racing" to read all the new stuff before it mystically hides. Jay * I say "should" because there are right and wrong ways to handle this problem and what the MC has chosen is one of the wrong ways.

Unfortunately the forum software is more than 12 years old and very unlikely to change. If you look at the source: inline html, no CSS. I almost want to say "poor devil who has to maintain this website", but I think much like an ancient piece of machinery, there's not much maintaining going on. For now, I can only suggest you make use of the advantages of tabbed browsing. Visiting many forums where "new posts" and when the "cup turns white" are handled differently, I adopted a method of opening everything of interest in a new tab. When I'm done reading a topic, I simply close the tab and move on to the next one. I really don't see any other way in regards to the system (or lack thereof) used on this forum. Comfy right from the start ... Good luck |
