My vote goes to Dan Tong. Simple, direct, easy to follow for spectators, audience participation, and SHORT

My routine is based on Steve Dacri's routine. I love the wand vanishes with a 3 cup routine, so I use a wand with mine. Vernon wand spin, Williamson's through the fist vanish, then hand the wand to a spectator and have them tap the cup only to find the ball isn't there. Then a different spectator makes it appear, this is perfect misdirection for the first load. Of course, Bill is right...(as usual) about the Single Cup routine. I also do Scotty York's routine with 3 balls and one cup. Anyone with an understanding of vanishes and loading techniques can do this routine impromptu.

I don't use a suspicious ball but a die and a natural looking dice cup and under hard performance conditions people can grab the props at any point of the routine. My technique gives me more security, confidence and flexibility. Moves are more natural and magic can happen in the hand of the spectator. So what is the point making you think "Just a cup" is made to fool magicians? Just because it fools magicians too? |

I don't perform for magicians, and Just A Cup is a great piece for lay people. It hadn't occurred to me to fool magicians with it.
The fact that there is only one 'ball' [die in this case] in play is a big advantage. I like it a lot. |

I like doing a version of Jamie Grant's mini chop cup routine sometimes and a version of Jonathan Kamm's other times. Like Bill advised, I vary it according to where I'm at.
Here's Jonathan's- it starts at 3:04 but his ACR is worth watching before that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFkRIPlZeZs I also agree that the Mark James routine is great and very entertaining.

I believe the routine was Ron Wilson's and Jennings published it in a rush when asked for something in Genii. They failed to credit Wilson, who was not happy about it. The use of the silk to cover the load was Bob Stencil's.

I thought Jonathan Kamm's routing ^ was very smooth; I especially enjoyed the clean ending.

Kamm uses a straight cup and balls, no chop gimmicks.

Yes, that's true. Jonathan's routine is not a chop cup. Sorry about that. I use my Morrisey chop cup for it, but he just uses a cocktail shaker of sorts.

One of the Junior members of the Magic Castle, named AKI, fooled us badly with his cup routine. I think he's a student of Shoot Ogawa's.

Sorry about the improper credit. Yes, it is a version of the Dennis Loomis routine. Sort of. I was inspired by watching the Magic Friday episode and began working on a routine and then mistakenly began thinking of what I had seen as Jamie Grant's routine. I actually went back and watched it just now and I have to say I forgot the routine- mine is different from it, but I should really thank Dennis for inspiration. I don't perform it anything like the routine Jamie demos with the exception that I do a 2 ball finale. My patter and routine are completely different with the addition of one more ball along the journey to the finale.
I guess one of my favorite routines is actually my own- inspired by Dennis Loomis and Jamie Grant. With a touch of Don Alan

I'm not going to argue the point with you, Axel. However, every presentation I have seen you do of it is geared in that direction. Perhaps it is because the presentations I have seen have been primarily the one that was done at the Castle, and the ones you have done at magic conventions. However, there have been one cup routines with no apparent gimmicks that use precisely the same principle for a very long time, and they are not nearly as expensive.
I performed a one cup routine in the spectator's hand at Renaissance festivals as early as 1995. Dennis Loomis did so even before that. Quote: On Jun 2, 2014, Axel Hecklau wrote:

Nevertheless, Bill, I rate Axel's product highly. Perhaps the price is high, but I have no regrets.
I do a one cup routine using two baseball final loads and a hold out; so the little leather dice cup is a very good alternative if I'm not set up to do that. I don't go to conventions, I don't go to magic clubs, I don't perform for magicians. The only magicians I ever come across are at events, and we're all busy working. |

After studying the chop cup for a while. I still love watching the Paul Daniels routine. But I love the simplicity of Don Alans routine especially the first phase. This makes the premise clear which I think some routines lack. Mark James' routine has shades of this too which I love.

Im looking to create my own. How do you guys go about it. Routine it first then input the moves or off the cuff ala ACR? I love Paul and Dons.

Also, stick with it and let it evolve over time with performance hours - perhaps only in minute detail, perhaps with a move added or taken away. Finally, you can perform the same routine in different ways.. Just my opinion of course. ps or else have 2-3 routines+ e.g. I have a different routine with a mini cup for strolling. |

Yeah I was contimplating using a small Telc Wand or not, go to the pocket or not. When I practice it myself I'm trying to get into a routine of sequences but lol find my self doing different things then I plan in my head as I do it.. These are just some of the ones I'm looking at to gather options and combinations. Like I love Dons routine but do not love the whole not showing the ball when I take it from the cup. I love Pauls but theat speed sequence is not in my style and Love Roths but find it rather short. So tying to build a Frankenstien of them all and the last one is a friend of mine whos routine is amazing in my eyes but would never want to learn it phase by phase..
