I absolutely live the idea behind this effect as it touches me very personally. My grandfather was a B-24 navigator during WWII, and when he finally was granted leave to marry my grandmother, the rest if his squadron was redeployed to the Pacific theater. En route, his plane (without him on it) crashed into a mountain during a bombing run with all crew lost, except for two whose remains were never identified or found, hence they were classified as MIA, but presumed to have perished. It was a story that I only learned about a year or so before his death, after I had joined up to serve as well. Out of six generations of my family that have served in the Armed Forces, he and I were the only ones to have seen combat and the horror and heartache that it brings. With that in mind though, I have one or two quick questions:
1) You state that it will be possible to ID the service branch that the MIA was in. Are there any names that are from the US, and if so, are they classified as US Army Air Corps, as the Aur Force (at least in the US) didn't exist as a seperate service branch until appx 1947? 2) What are the size if these files, and are they based upon actual examples of MIA files? Greatly looking forward to these answers, as I believe that not only would this make an amazing addition to my act, but would also in a way honor those crew members that served with my grandfather who were never officially identified.
Love me or hate me, but you'll never forget me!

@armymagic
There are 6 American servicemen among the 40 files, of which two are airmen. They are indeed listed as US Army Air Corps The files are in the form of a folded card. In its folded state the file-cards are A6 size. Inside each file-card is a photograph of a microfilm archive of the MIA report. The cards are hand aged individually. It's funny that you should mention seeing it as a way to honour all MIAs from conflicts in the past. On a thread in the Crypt the opposite point of view was expressed. Namely that it may be an abuse of their memory. Which is one reason I put the warning text into the trailer. I must say a big thank you to George, here on the Café , for his great help with the video. Steve |

Sorry giving some wrong info there (note to self; don't type when you haven't properly woken up)
American airmen are listed as serving in the US Army Air Force Below is the historical timeline we used as a guide. Air Service, U.S. Army (May 24, 1918 to July 2, 1926) U.S. Army Air Corps (July 2, 1926 to June 20, 1941)* and U.S. Army Air Forces (June 20, 1941 to September 17, 1947)** Steve |

Thanks for the confirmation Steve, much appreciated. While some may think it a form of disrespect, it's all about the way that its presented, and shouldn't be done in any way as just another trick. Done with style, grace, and honor to those who never returned will make this effect. Heck, even the Lun@ and R00m$ervice effects can be seen as disrespectful just based on the fact that many perished in those depressing rooms and corridors. It's all about showing that respect while performing these wonderful and extremely moving effects. Just my two cents.

Stephen your MIA looks great, but I must admit that my first thoughts about the thread had something to do with "Where's Roth." My error, wishing you much success with Missing in Action.

Just performed this for the first time tonight. My audience was made up of holidaymakers and local residents, about 40 people in all. I started by showing the box I found on a certain auction site and they opened it and examined the contents, these included the file cards as well as some old potos of service personel, a couple of old medals, some old looking badges off of uniforms etc.
I let them look at all the Ãtems while I told the story of how research had been done on psychic spying, explaining that this method , if it was posible, had so many advantages. For one, a spy coouldnt be caught with any incriminating evidence about their person, secondly the person who was the reciever could be in a different country and so the information was instantly available, remember this was long before the internet was even dreamt about. I then had a lady select one of the fike cards while I was on the other side of the room. I then asked her to look at the information on the card as I sat down opposite her. As she and her friend were Reading the information on the card, because they had the card open like a book I was only able to see the back of it ( which was exactly what I wanted to see ) I then had all the information I needed and asked her to pass the card along to others so that they could have a look. I then did the reveals much in the same way as I do when performing Luna, I was able to add in sooo much unverifiable information because I was getting sooo many hits they just accepted it as correct, for example instead of revealing the initials I used names, because they can see the initials they just accept that the name I give is correct, for example tonight the initials were I W and the person was American so I said I hear his friend calling him , it sounds like Ian or William, no wait his name is Ian but the sername begins with a W am I correct, from this point on I always refered to him as Ian Williams, and also used the term flight sergeant Williams, as the Rank is not visible they just accept that it is true because everything else is. Anyway enough rambling my main reason for this post was to say, after I had finished and we were at the bar having a drink, a guy comes over and says "that was very interesting, I watched a program on the TV abot it a couple of months ago " !!! he then told everyone that what I had been doing was what he saw on the TV, Finishing by saying that he didn't realice things were so advanced all those years ago ! Never mind, I don't mind taking the credit for all the hours of research I must have done. Thanks Steve for a fantastic prop.

My pleasure George.
Francois and I are very proud of this effect. Did they easily accept the props as being what you said they were? Steve |

Nobody questioned the props at all, I was just amazed that this guy told everyone about a TV program that never was !

Hi Stephen,
Get my set today - really great and lovely work - Thank you!, will test it in the next week. In my eyes M.I.A is better than "T** F*****" by Jim C. because the Props look more realistic and your story and the setting is much more "unbelieveble"... Regards Stefan |
