Jonathan,
Thanks for that suggestion on the Blackout. It's opened up a number of possibilities that I will be exploring. It will work for a very convincing final vanish. Jim. |

I just wish RPW's vanish of the third coin in the across sequence was more convincing than an unsubtle use of the Ramsay Subtlety of posing in a way that permits the audience to see an empty palm.
I have a basic conceptual problem with routines where the hand-to-hand travels occur after producing the coins from thin air. The routine folks are working from avoided doing such a thing and instead depended on a signature coin-through-hand bit. To my sensibilities the vanish is implied by the production, so working with both hands leaves a begged question about whether it's the same coin that travels or whether the magician simply put one back where he got it and pulled another into view with his other hand.

Two excellent points, Jonathan:
1) certainly, the Idea; "no-touch" presentation would have the hands NEVeR touch at any time during the effect, and the passing hand displayed completely empty at the end. Possible, but doable. However, it is difficult to know if a lay spectator would find this more magical. 2) I have had similar concerns over many magic effects -- but am not sure if it matters to the audience. It would only be in the reconstruction that such thoughts might occur, and this can be diverted in several ways. An effective presentation can even be made by claiming that this is what is happening, i.e. coins vanish and appear at will in order to give the impression that they move about. One approach called "non-visible coins" offers that invisibility is the natural state of the special coins and they are only brought temporarily into view by magic. I guess the ultimate question is whether Transportations is considered more powerful magic than sequential vanishes/productions. Either way, the hands should be clean at the end.
