Have any of you folks ever had a power outage during your stage show?

I was performing at a casino one night for like 400 people in Deadwood SD with a comic... thankfully, my half of the show went well (full power for sound & lights), but about 10 minutes into my friend's set, power in the entire town died. He got through it successfully by projecting his voice and the front row holding cellphone flashlights...

We got it all on video:

(Some NSFW language, use discretion)

But it got me to thinking... what would I have done? I mean, I do magic, so people gotta see me... and I am so dependent on audio & music cues, I think I would have been screwed.

Has it ever happened to you? What did you do? Do the rest of you have a backup plan?

It's happened to a few shows I was doing sound/lights for. I would have a backup plan. I don't have backup lights (besides flashlights) but I always have a backup sound system that can run on battery power.

It would definitely throw me off a bit! I guess I should consider a battery-run lighting option...just in case.

I didn't watch the video, but I'm glad your friend was able to recover.

It's happened to me once at a library show. Since then, I've tried to keep my battery system with in case I need it.

Seems like your friend handled that well and managed to incorporate it into the act. Has he thought about adding a 5 minute lights out bit to his show? It seemed like the audience was into the impromptu jokes he was tossing around.

lol... we DO use a remote-controlled spotlight, so we could easily make that happen. I'll run it by him. Might be a fun addition.
