Angelo carbone's cue the magic. I tried to do a search but couldn't find any activity. Has anyone used it or seen it. Looks fun but maybe a little clumsy. What are your thoughts.
Thanks |

I've used it. I really liked the plot idea. Unfortunately, the reactions weren't as strong as I had hoped. Not sure why but it's one of those routines that you have to keep moving because it can drag if you're not careful. Also, it relies hugely on the spectator you pick. If the spectator is flat/quiet, you're essentially screwed. So the most crucial issue is identifying the right spectator. The props are nice. The handling can get a little clumsy so you have to practice is several times to get the card flipping down smoothly. Overall, your success with it comes down to your ability to act, your spectator's ability to play along actively/loudly, and a tiny bit of sleight of hand (if you can call it that). The cards supplied allow you to customize depending on the type of audience and the length of routine you prefer. From experience, the shorter the routine, the better. The price issue will always be a debatable topic. To me, it's overpriced but it all depends on how much you intend to use it.

I was with Justin (yes he is a magic friend) in his hotel room with 3 other magcians when he showed this to us. The moment I saw this I instantly saw the value. It is such a great idea and the method is really, really smart. This depends soley on the magician pulling this off, it has nothing to so with the spectator becuase no matter how they respond or act, YOU sell this to the audience (as Justin did so well on The Tonight Show)
This is one of those gems that I wish had not been released and only shown to a small few. If I did stage shows (when I do stand up comedy I only do material related to funny, no magic is included anymore) of any kind I would put this in somewhere. JM |

I have to agree with Eric on this one. I have been using this effect for a while now and while the onus is somewhat on the magician to pull this off, it is fair to say that the spectator you bring on stage is in fact very crucial to pulling this off with great success. I usualy fit this in towards the end of my show to give me plenty of time to gauge the audience members and determine who would be perfect to bring on stage. I do belive that you have to be comfortable as a comedy performer to get the most success out of this routine. Because, if you do get that spectator every now and then that just can't sell it, you need to use your comedy chops to pull it through. Yes, the performer is largely responsible for selling this, but I disagree that a bad spectator can't kill the routine. Got a lot of love for Justin and think he is a brilliant performer, but c'mon...Kristin Chenoweth can make anything look amazing. She would be the dream spectator for any show.
One great point is that there are various cards to filter in and out to customize the presentation for different audiences. One for general audiences, one a little more double entendre for a more colorful show, and they have one geared towards kids. I will say I have had a lot of fun playing off some of the more colorful things a spectator says on stage and there is huge comedy potential. However, after doing this at a couple shows strictly for kids, I will remove this routine from that set. It just doesn't get as great of a reaction for kids as some other stuff I can stick in there. Long story short....Awesome routine, can get great reaction, but a dry spectator could kill this no matter how big your comedy chops are. |

I don't own this particular routine so I can't speak to the props themselves, but I'll weigh in: Any routine marketed as "comedy magic" or "a complete comedy routine with guaranteed laughs" is inevitably going to lure in guys who are not comedy performers looking for an easy way to add laughs to their show. And these tricks *never* do. The only thing that's going to generate laughs in your show is if *you* are funny.
Just like "self working tricks" can be done poorly or even failed, "comedy magic tricks" require an excellent comedian to make them funny. They give you a springboard for generating laughs, but do not generate laughs all on their own. In the hands of a pro comedy magician (like Justin Willman and others mentioned in this thread), this routine would kill. In the hands of the average magician purchasing a comedy magic trick, it's going to take work. |

Good points Brian. Ill add that even if the routine and props are great, the performer will still suck the first few times they perform it.

Seems very expensive to me, maybe its just me but I think I can think of better things to spend that much cash on

This item is extremely well-made and in terms of physical goods, well worth it. the working is well thought out to eliminate awkward movements. I'm glad I bought this as it's a very commercial routine.

Reminds me of The Silent Treatment by Jon Allen. Great idea with the cue cards and audience involvement though. Looks like a winner.

Got my copy yesterday. Props are well made and should last a long time if you treat them right. I am very happy with this purchase. If you like the routine then I recommend it. The process/method is pretty simple to do before the reveal of the spectator's any named card. This comes complete ready to perform. It does have some built in humor lines the audience should react to even if you are not a good ad-libber but experienced performers would be able to easily add this to their set fairly quickly. Some performers may disagree with that approach but this is an effect that you can do this with. You may want to memorize what's written on the cards before performing it as this will make your reactions and ad-libbing easier and more fluent. But it's definitely a simple effect, as far as methodology, to perform. Of course a seasoned performer will be able to milk more comedy out of this.
Is it worth $230- some may think not some may think so. I see the value in it so I think it's worth it. Very portable taking up such minimal space but will play very big. I can't wait to give this a go!! RNK

I just had a question about if the cards can be customized so He could use Spanish.
The answer is no and yes, the cards are printed and can not be changed. There are tips in the instructions on what fonts and sizes to use if you want to make your own cards. There are 26 different cards with different phrases, you can mix and match to make a routine that works best for you. ~Steve |

Jim Steinmeyer had a wonderful little prediction-style cue card sort of routine - actually, two different ones - in his 'Conjuring' column in Genii Magazine within the last couple of years. THe names escape me at the moment, but a quick search on ask alexander.org would locate them. Both can be done for the cost of some poster board at your local office supply store.
That said, I think Angelo's idea/effect is really, really good and well worth the cost for a professional performer.
It's all in the reflexes.

Thanks S-Branham, that's exactly what I wanted to know.
Looks like a great routine I think the $ 230 is well spent, there must have been a lot of thought into this one. |
