I have an idea (or at least a starting point for one, although it is a little esoteric. The Chinese Book of Changes, Yi Jing (I Ching) list eight trigrams:

You'll notice that the heaven trigram is made up of three solid lines, like the three chambers of the flame clock. When this heavenly energy manifests on earth it becomes fire, the fire trigram is made up of two solid lines on the outside and a broken line on the inside. This transformation of the heaven trigram to the fire trigram mirrors what happens to the candle in the fire clock. I would talk about how the human spirit exists in a state of purity before it takes on physical body and manifests on earth. In this process of manifestation, part of this purity is lost, and cannot be regained until the casting of the physical body.
