Both the weirdest food I've ever eaten, and one of my favorites is "Rocky Mountain Oysters". (I don't think anybody will understand us on this point, Harry!)
Should you ever have occasion to eat them, I won't ruin the surprise asto what they are. I'll tell you this, though. They're not oysters, and they're not even seafood. BTW, Harry, I've never had Lamb Fries. How would you rate them compared to Rocky Mountain Oysters? Dik-Dik shish-ka-bob would have to be a close second. Dik-Dik is a type of African deer. I had when I visited South Africa. It's yummy! |

Like Harry, one of my weirdest was Iguana. I was in Costa Rica, deep in the rainforest on a hike. There was a makeshift 'restaurant' at the trailhead.
There, too, they said it would taste like chicken. I wouldn't disagree much on that aspect, but it sure didn't look like chicken. They served it whole....ugh! Lots of tiny bones, too, as I recall. PS- Anyone who served in the military will probably agree with me that just about everything served as 'sea rations' was weird! |

Hey! Eel is great (also called Unagi). It's one of my favorites. Seriously, it's not as bad as it sounds. I love most kinds of sushi, raw sea bass, raw yellowtail, baby octopus (you eat the whole thing. All of it.)
Probably the worst story is my dad was a on a buisness trip to Japan. He was taken out to a very fancy restaraunt. All there was was a big tank with fish swimming around in it. You pick your fish and they cut it up and serve it to you, the pieces of meat are still wiggling when you eat them. |

Well, I have gone to China and visit a village and have lunch with the people there in their house. After lunch I went out for a walk and as I recall before entering the house I saw two puppy. As I am curious I ask one of the people around and -Gosh- they told me its already been served as one of the dish I have eaten.
Its their tradition there to eat all this and now the latest trend is eating cat. -Belive it or not!!!-

Back at the Sushi Bar... they have something called Uni. Taste like Sea Foam. It's the reproductive organs of a sea urchin. Yummy with a raw quail egg on top!

Harry,
I guess it is what you are raised on! However, our beef (NZ beef) has a pretty good reputation world-wide, so I am pretty happy to have it all the time. I have to agree with you on the Kobe beef. Truly superb, and perfectly ruined if you don't cook it right! I don't trust myself to do it right, but thankfully my girlfriend is a trained chef!!

I would probably say eggs, when you think about it,it is kind of bizarre.
I remember having squid (not too fond of that) and various kinds of sushi when in Japan. There was also some VERY hot soup, that I could barely take. A coworker of mine from UK, who I met up with when I got there, drank down the whole bowl in one long chug on a dare!! I ate a lot of strange stuff when I was there and you kind of get tired of asking "whats this" after awhile and just eat it the best you can. GlenD

Coyote, Jellyfish, ants (quite spicy) and flying fish roe (very tasty). Lobster roe is excellent also (who needs butter?).

Scott, I prefer Rocky Mountain Oysters to Lamb Fries. There is just more to them and the taste is more pronounced.
Chris, I’ll reserve my opinion on NZ beef for now. I have wanted to take a trip to Australia and NZ in the near future so will patiently wait until I get there to try the beef. I just can’t imagine any range fed beef tasting better than corn fed. Blindbo, you had Iguana served the same way I remember it. Lots of small bones. By the way, I forgot to mention Scrapple! Now there is a weird food (is it even food?)! Has anyone tried “Scrapple”? What is that all about!

You know, I'm just wondering how they came up with Deep Fried Twinkies and Snickers. Ick...just the thought of ingesting one of those makes me ill! I'll take a funnel cake or caramel apple over one of those any day!

KEGOLGI in Korea. I'll spare the details as you can do an internet search for it. And once again, it just tastes like Chicken. Which reminds me of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. He spoke of the exotic foods his family served at Christmas. Family members saying "Here try pheasant.....try squirrel....it tastes like chicken....it tastes like Chicken".
Bobcat's response: "Well if it tastes like chicken, why don't you just give me some frickin' chicken! It's only the cheapest meat in the world!" |

A cobra feast in Malaysia. Baby cobras for an apitizer, a full size cobra cooked grilled like eel (it was pretty good), and the end of the meal ended with a real treat. A cobra shot. It is a shot glass of rice wine with the venom sack of a cobra inside it. You nock it back like a real shot and then, aparently, loose time for about three or four hours.

Excellent! When you come and visit, look me up and I can treat you to a 'traditional' kiwi BBQ! I think the beef preference is a matter of taste and upbringing. They have very different flavours, so I guess it is hard to say which is nicer...kind of like comparing chocolate ice cream to strawberry....they are both ice cream but....

Aligator ( a bit gamey) and another time sea cucumber (which is a big worm)--at the time wouldn't have eaten it if I knew.

Well besides Iguana, doves, rabbit, deer, buffalo , alligator, chocolate covered ants, fried crikets, I'll say the weirdest food I've had is Jumiles, is an insect from the state of Guerrero, Mexico and for more information and pictures of them you can go here:

I forgot to mention domestic burro from Argentina. Whether anyone here realizes it or not, the schools of America serve it. My Grandmother was the head nutritionalist for the Centralia school district in southern California. She used to bring home (illegal) the large #10 cans of burro when the expiration date came due. The Federal Government purchases the burro for many different programs, such as penal institutions, public schools (is there a difference), the military and various other programs. On the menu's it is refered to as "beef" and it is in the form of cubes. If you have ever eaten "beef" in any of these places, you probably have eaten burro, Hee Haw.
