You know, you want to postope learning sleight X, but want to come to it later.
Or you enhanced an effect. Whatever. You need to make some notes. Do you write into your books or use notebooks or other method? I would like to put some notes ( mostly reminders, what I didn't learn yet ) into my books but then I realize the price of them and then I go, oh, maybe sometimes other people will learn from them. Although I don't want to sell them I think I will damage them with my notes. I am really curious what do you do in this situation. |

I do whatever gets me the desired results. Books are not sacred. If writing in them is what furthers your magic fastest do it. Do you want pristine magic books or to be a magician?

For books on sleight of hand and card magic, I usually don't write in them, mainly because I don't have to. In that case, most of my writing is based on my patter and presentation, so I just do that in various notebooks. With mentalism, however, I usually write in the books as long as they don't cost a ridiculous amount. In that case, I just take notes in a notebook and write relevant page numbers next to them.

If you become famous as a magician, amateur or professional, your notes, comments and signature (and date you acquired the book) on the front page will actually add to its value to a collector. Imagine what a book owned by Houdini and containing his scribbles would get at an auction today!

I use post-it notes to write on. If your going to write in the book, use a softer pencil, not ink.

I either write in the margins and underline in my books to draw my attention to areas I consider important. If I am anal about keeping the volume in pristine condition I then resort to post-it notes for further reference.

Same as Ray. Plus I keep a record in a word and excel files of tricks I know, their sources, routines I know or build, their sources, important variations and modifications, and their sources, so as to be able to find quickly anything I want/need.

I will print out my notes and stick them in the book with re-positional glue, they canhen be removed later without damaging the book.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

I kills me to mess up a beautiful book, and I like all of my notes in one place, so I bought a hard bound blank paged book, and decided it up into sections for notes referring back to the page - this is also where I can expand on my own ideas.

I am a total post-it fanatic, my books are always very yellow.
When I am writing more than one sentence I usually add a complete sheet of paper. I try not to harm the books, if I want to sell them again, I want them in good condition. |

I don't like to see books defaced, and often sit with an eraser to "clean" second hand books as I read. I never turn loose of a book. Nothing I own will ever be resold!
If I'm in a hurry, I'll use note pad paper tucked into the pages for notes, but that's temporary. Like others here, I use Post-Its, both for notes on the page and for "bookmarks". Lots of colors and shapes. They even make a kind that is like "onion skin" paper, so you can read through it. I also keep an Excel file that serves as my "card catalogue", with everything listed by title, author, date of publication and print number. This also includes a synopsis and list of major (or merely interesting) effects included. (This also helps if I choose to "loan" a book to another magi. Unless I have a "backup copy", it doesn't leave my house!) Besides all that, I keep a notebook where resides my original ideas, mash-ups, rehashes, and presentation changes. And jokes...got to have the jokes...
...what if I could read your mind?

These are all excellent suggestions, particularly the post-its, which allow you to mark multiple parts of the same page or facing pages. Also, if you should happen to have the opportunity to buy a digital copy of a book, I know there are several e-reader programs that allow you to take notes directly in the document, although that's hardly useful for those wonderful tomes lining the bookshelf!

I mark pages with tags to easily flip to them and underline.

I only have ebooks/pdf's, so I use windows' Sticky Notes for everything, and also magic.

I usually write in mine with a pencil. And I usually enjoy reading old notes that I find in pre-owned books, it's like getting a second view on how to do something. Hopefully one of my notes will help someone understand something a little be better one day.

Post its for me as well, mostly to find quickly the material I'm looking for. I've never had the urge need to scribble any magic book. Maybe because they where well enough written?
