Hello.
I have been looking at routines recently about thimbles and I must ask: Does anyone do any thimble routines? If so, do you have to by thimbles specifically at magic shops or do ones found at a sewing store work? Also, anyone know of and good instructional materials? Gratias tibi ago quam maximas, -Nate |

I think the most complete work is "Digital Effects, The Magic of Joe Mogar" by Steve Beam. Joe also has a DVD out called "Thimble Dexterity" and he sells thimbles on his website, http://joemogar.tripod.com/id7.html

Personally I think thimbles are prime for a big comeback in magic. Extreme Thimble Magic, close up, is something that the public has not really seen. It's been presented on stage as a manipulation act, but as a close up trick, it could totally rock an audience in the right hands.
Basically, I would suggest learning the classic techniques and see what you can modify to bring the trick up close. For a reference, Geoffrey Buckingham shows his outrageous thimble palming technique on his "The Magic and Manipulation of" DVD - very classically demonstrated. Thimbles have been on my mind a lot lately... |

I regularly do a 4 phase kid routine at my restaurant. Goes over great, the quaintness of a thimble leads to many patter possibilities. I too often try way too many 'moves, in a manipulation routine when, especially in a restaurant, trying a few and experimenting leads to a more people pleasing routine.

I saw Steve Beam demonstrate some of what is in the Mogar book when it first came out. I completely agree that it can be affective close up. I t was both fun to watch and was quite magical.

What I like about thimbles is thaty they don't take up much space and you can do much magic with it. product the timble from a childs ear make it vanish or change color. it is great for jazz magic.

I've not found any suitable thimbles from a sewing store, they just don't seem to be available anymore. His digital dexterity dvd is very good, shoot ogowa had a thimble dvd as well, Shoot uses "magicians thimbles" the elongated ones. |

Some obscure magician from Canada has Paul Rosini's routine in his, all too rarely mentioned, Book of Magic. Still, it was the first thimble routine that popped into my mind.
Real magicians have been known to go to the trouble to find beautiful, silver thimbles to do this particular routine. Sometimes spending time looking for and finding the right stuff to do our little tricks is, on occasion, more than worth the effort |

Just saw Shoot Ogawa lecture last night, and he does some amazing stuff with thimbles.

Many, many years ago (1986?) I bought a nice routine from Magic Inc. I can't remember what it is called. It might be Werry's Nimble Thimble. It came with a thick, red, plactic thimble that I still have. I wish these were still available.

I just remembered! It is Garrett's Nimble Thimble. Came with the thimble and a three or four page routine.

Look in grocery stores or, like, K-Mart check-out aisle for those little sewing kits. They come with a little plastic thimble. I have one red one and one green one. Fun to amuse kids with!

I love thimble routines and it sounds as if pepoel enjoy watching them as well. But there is part of me that knows there is a large amount of pepole that don't know what thimbles are. So dose this need a bit of creative thinking about it. Just like Chad long Flash. May be white board marker lids could be used. Small plastic shoot glasse. I once was messing around with a empty plastic communion glass ones and that worked.
Just ideas
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Yellowcustard, I do an eight thimble routine as opening in my kids show. NO child ever questioned me what it was wat I was using. the are simple having fun. no need to go extreem in exlaining what it is. that is what I like about thimble you can make them appear and vanish at will or make a color change. just two thimble in your pocket and you can jazz magic. it ist visual magic - people see the thimble appear on your finger that is what is so amazing. you can call them a bathtub for dwarfs.

I have a problem with thimble. The first trick I learned was a thimble Thumb palm and it brought me into magic.
Yet the prop is not perceived as very "male" and not very magical: this tickles me. I solved the problem in making my thimble looking like little Fez hats (covering them with red felt and adding a short yellow pompom) and drawing happy and sad faces on my fingers (with curly hair drawn to get under the thimble) Then many moves from Ramsay -check Andrew Galloway's books to build your own routine- or other sources become fun and entertaining (in my experience at least).
