I know Devonte asked us to post in "Latest & Greatest",however that thread has become way past what L&G is for (at least as I understand the rules),so I thought I'd start a new thread on System 6's Haunt Doll that gets things on track here were it seems should be......Presentation Ideas & props like the box & wrap I made that seems to have created an interest (& for those new without 50 posts yet,as we are not discussing secrets but different performance ideas & props to share & use with they're Haunted Doll).
I would like to start with 2 boxes I found the other day bouncing around to the different thrift stores, I stripped & redid them. One rough & dyed dark & the other the wife suggested I try some color, what'cha think ?: 1st 4 pics of dark brown box is Redwood, burned & stained with scratches, dents & ruff designs engraved, second red box (3 pics) I used some red dye I had left over to be different, but tempted to sand it off & go more like the 1st dark brown box, but leaving the design on top - (should play thru all 7-next arrow to right of pic); http://www.flickr.com/photos/merlin64389......94400376 |

Looks nice,Merlinsmagic!
Maybe to 'B' movie...but,one could use one of those little coffin boxes, picked up for 99 cents,at craft stores! For the VooDoo theme!

Thanx G, hey those coffin boxes could work if your doing a routine around that !
I'm still looking for "blanks" as I don't feel like making them (yet,LoL), so as I get some done as I find them, I'll post them generally here & then in the Sale section if anyone become interested in a box & wrap. Each will be unique & I'm not looking to put my cat thru college, couple bucks for the box & shipping, more or less to help those out that would like a box/wrap but can't find one near them..... |

I agree with barts185. The first one is very dark...especially with the gnarly markings.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Thank you both, the 1st one has been pre spoken for, but from what you 2 say, I'm sanding off the second & re staining it to a "Dark" puzzle box of mysteries.....looks like I will be creating more of the 1st then !
The second I was trying out a different look, but obviously wrong direction ! |

Nice boxes! I'm thinking of adding some perfume to the inside of my box. Demeter Library of Fragrances has some nice fragrances, like "Dirt", "Funeral Home", "Beeswax", "Mushroom" and "Earthworm". Imagine opening an old box, and a smell of dirt or earthworms starting to spread in the room. Then you pick up the burlap and unwrap the doll.

Yes they're available online: http://www.demeterfragrance.com
I have some of them, not all smells like the name suggests, but some are really good. I really like Dirt, it smells like wet soil/mud . |

They got a lobster scent, mixed with their salt air scent and I'm back on the east coast! Thanks for sharing the link for the scent library, my wife will now get the wrong idea completely when I tell her I ordered a new fragrance or two. "Hey honey, like my new perfume, it's called funeral home." Thanks again for the link!
Love me or hate me, but you'll never forget me!

I checked out the link. I am amazed that they are actually able to replicate such a wide variety of scents!

I have another idea for the Haunted Doll performance. I'd like to involve more senses, we have the visual and the smell. I've been thinking of the hearing. I have used my iPhone in the pocket to time whispering voices when doing the haunted key, and I was thinking of doing the same with the doll, but then I started to think about music boxes. especially those you have to manually turn around. It would involve the spectators. When they start to wind the music box, music is starting to play as the doll rises in your hand. Someone also mentioned using the Pure Smoke-effect. Think of combining all those effects/props, I think people would be very creeped out .
You start with a story about an old box you found at a flea market. The seller also gave you a music box, and said it "comes with the box". Then a few nights later you woke up, hearing a tune playing. When you got up to check the sound out it stopped, but something smelled really strange. After a while you remembered the box and the music box you bought at the flea market. You started to turn the music box, and there it was, the same music that had woke you up. You also heard a strange noise from inside the box. You opened it and found a piece of burlap that wasn't there when you bought it. You unwrapped the burlap and found a weird looking doll, with a weird smell that wasn't there before. Your wife/girlfriend/whatever has woken and get into the room and wondering what you're doing. You're holding the doll in your hand examining it and ask her if she know what it is. No she says? What's that? She picks up the music box and start to turn it. As the music start to play the doll moves in your hand and starting to rise. It freaks you out and you put it back in the box. The next day you go to the flea market to return it as it was way too creepy. When you get there, there's no flea market to be found. Instead there's a bakery. You go inside and ask about it, but no, the bakery has been there since 1856, and no one have ever heard of a flea market in the neighbourhood. So what you need is: The Haunted Doll A story A weird fragrance Some burlap An old looking box A music box (preferably also old looking) Maybe the Pure Smoke-effect I found pretty nice and cheap music boxes on Ebay, like this one: http://ebay.eu/1dVUmVW there's also a video with sound, I think it would work. Maybe scratch/burn the box a bit . |

That's what I would call genuine theatre.
The performance would probably have to bs done when people were not rushed or in a hurry (as with "Heirloom", for example) the actual telling of the story would take some time. So I'd guess this would not be for street performances. What venues would you plan to work it in?

I think I will start with family, friends and at work. I have a job where I meet lots of different people, and where I can take some time to do these kind of things without anyone thinking I'm not doing my job .

Love your storyline ideas djefvulen, especially the extra's like a magic smoke device & music box.I have a Magic Smoke V2 & the music box would be great if it played an eerie/creepy song,or gut one & play my own tune as I have tweaked/creepy music box audio & some whispering track (I create/mix SFX audio for Haunts). I also like the idea of the scents, we have used them in the Haunted House/Halloween industry for several years to add extra wham to making scene areas smell like the scene looks, great idea djefvulen to use them on the inside of box to add extra creep factor to HD !
It is amazing that some of the scents are spot on,some not so much.....I even had started mixing & creating my own scents at one time.....LoL Here's one of the guys supply places we use that started it in the Haunt Industry - http://shop.dreamreapers.com Looks like 1oz is pretty much the same at both places for $20. But I would like to give you some FYI on these scents, they come as an oil/mineral based & water based product. If anyone wants to use scents in they're fogger for Halloween *must make sure you use water based scents. For the Haunted Doll you could use either,oil/mineral based fragrance will last longer then the water based, but you will have to periodically re scent it with either. They really are effective & I can imagine opening a box with a HD in it & smell burnt, charred or a rotting smell ! The fresh dirt or graveyard scents,.....eh was not impressed, the fire / burnt scents most of them are pretty close Funeral home type scents have a dead air/musty smell from the ones I've smelled, but kind of lite scent. |

Just came up with another thought . Would it work to modify the doll so you can hang it on a leather necklace and easily remove it? I guess it would be nice for street magic, some people would probably ask what you're wearing around your neck. Sometimes I like when people take initiative and ask me, instead of "forcing" a trick on them .

I had already considered that thought by using either Hemp twine or a thin "old" (aged) leather lacing I have from a leather store & it would easily be attached so you could remove from doll, perform & reattach to hang back on your neck
Create a tied circle of whatever you want to use (knot at back of your neck 12 o'clock), place line behind doll body/arms, pull bottom of line 6 o'clock up in front of doll/in front of arms over doll's head & behind head (at rear neck of doll). This should keep doll locked on line & be able to use a s a necklace & easily remove doll from it & leave line on neck, then replace doll on line as before ! No need to modify Doll this way - The doll's arms act as the hang spot & back of doll's neck the lock point (if any of that makes sense as I typed......) Considered also tying a small burlap bag/sack with doll inside also, making people wonder "what's in the little old bag around your neck"......... |
