Hi, all,
I'm picking up magic again for about the fourth time, but I'm older, and my hands are very dry and slippery enough that things I used to be able to conceal in them now are likely to slip out. Has anybody got suggestions for this? Obviously I don't want to go too far and end up with sticky hands, so I'm looking for a happy medium here. Thanks, Patrick |

I also have dry hands and the best product that works for me is Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream.

I also too have dry hands. I usually use Gold Bond Ultimate Healing, but also use Vaseline Intensive Care. Both very good. Just shop around and try some samples to see what works for you.

I have dry hands myself and have a hard time with some certain sleights. I use lotion a little bit before I am practicing and seems to help.

Find "Chamberlain Golden Touch Lotion".

Thanks, everybody! You've given me ample options to try, which should keep me busy for a while.

I just learned something new today. I never knew that older people have slippery hands!

Man oh man do we old farts have slippery hands!! And we are not alone... Here are some magicians - many very well known, some alive and some not - and the products they used (or sold!):
So there's a few, anyway. Probably many more but I don’t have any info about them. Jim |

I use sortkwik when I just need finger control
or thumb control. And I use chamberlain's when the whole hand needs to be in control such as classic palm's. Todd |

I reopen this thread because I have the same problems. I bought a manipulation spray which works fine. BUT: are there possibilities to get rid of this problem in general? I read something about vaseline and cotton gloves during the night but I'm a bit sceptical. Any recommendations or expeience?

I wash my hands thoroughly with hot water and soap, then rinse with cold water (the colder the better), then apply a tiny amount of butter, rub it in thoroughly, and then scrub my hands dry with a clean, dry towel.
Sometimes my hands sweat a lot and nothing will stay where it's supposed to, and sometimes they're as dry as parchment and nothing will stay either, depending on the weather. This helps me with both extremes. Be sure to really scrub with the towel, or you'll be defeating the purpose. You're basically removing all of the hands' natural oils, shocking them with the hot-cold water combo, and then re-moisturizing them, going for that "happy medium". It works for me, maybe it'll work for others.
'Tis an ill wind that blows no minds.

Not sure I would recommend it unless you had a more severe case than slippery hands...but that is just my opinion because I can't imagine sleeping in gloves. |

Start imagining! (some older people even sleep with socks!
Very old joke (really only "good" if delivered verbally): "Heard about the old lady who sleeps with cats?" --"Yes, Mrs. Katz!" sorry about that! --well, not really sorry. When I was younger, I bought "Bowlers Grip" at bowling alleys. Now, I use Chamberlain's "GOLDEN TOUCH LOTION" (www.chamberlainlotion.com) Last time I bought a bottle (8.5 oz.) I think it was around $5,00) Many drug stores carry it. Magic shops often rebottle it and charge $5.00 for a couple ounces. (They used to do that with zinc stearate and sell it as fanning powder. --Of course the price was raised for "repackaging". Get a small "spray" bottle (wife's empty cologne bottle)and do your own repackaging! Eveyone's "body chemistry" is "different". Golden Touch works for ME. I aplit a bottle with Jon Racherbaumer. He owes all his success as a cardician to me! Hee Hee!

In the winter months, when the air is very dry, I use "O'Keefe's for Working Hands" cream (works at the PH level of your skin) and in the summer months it's "Chamberlain's Golden Touch" lotion. As Dick said, different strokes for different folks.
Cheers!

I have very dry hands. I've tried all kinds of products and I've found making your own by mixing glycerin, rose water and alcohol to be the best. I get the right amount of tack for those sleight you need good friction for.

I would like to say, being older myself and suffering from what I call the "smooth slippery finger syndrome." This thread has been most helpful. You have my thanks.

I have always had dry hands, and I have found that I tend to do less magic that requires moist hands. When I see a cool move, I give it a try. If it doesn't work with dry hands, I pass.
I frequently do impromptu magic and then I can't say: "Wait, let me go put some lotion on." As many have said, you only need half a dozen to a dozen max really good routines. I have at least a handful of good routines and effects that don't require any lotion. KJ |
