Hello everyone,
I've recently took interest in the Cups and Balls routine (the classic one (3 cups/ 4 balls / 3 lemons), but I'm looking for a way to perform it without a jacket or a vest, just a t-shirt or a sweater with no pockets. Any ideas ? Should I use a drawer in the table, or craft a discreet solution for the lemons using back pockets ? Best Regards, Saad |

Hi, Plexusonfire -
Without giving away any secrets in this public forum, here are two links of stripped down routines. The promo for the Penguin Cups sounds exactly like what you're thinking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHKc0dCokfw Here's another clean routine from Al Schneider Al Schneider "Street Cups" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Drr3nuN2U The tutorials can be purchased by buying the cups or buying "Al Schneider Cups and Balls" DVD. |

Al Schneider's DVD is also available as a download, and is well worth watching. He is a very thoughtful magician, who takes great care to achieve natural movements.

Penguin's cups look like what I'm looking for. Thank you for your help, guys.

As you get into the cups, you'll learn to watch the hands carefully. Also keep reading these posts and you'll begin to see possibilities.

Speaking of the Penguin Cups- the bonus DVD called the "Table Hopping Cups and Balls" is a two cup routine that is designed specifically to be jacketless.
The other idea is to just use sponges as final loads. |

Thank you guys for your help, I'm getting my sponges (first ones yay) in a couple of days and I'll figure out decent cups so that I'll start practicing the routine. I'll come back to you once I'm comfortable with it or have more questions. Thank you !

In the mean time you can use Penn and Teller's cups and balls- red plastic cups and tin foil balls!

Apparently my orders are gonna be late So I guess I'll settle for P&T's cups and balls and you suggest, VanishedAce. Thanks for the reminder.

Producing a final load that so easily compressed is frowned upon by most cups and balls performers, but I don't think the audience minds a bit. Carl segues into a sponge ball routine afterwards. But, is it a stronger magic trick to produce a real lemon or lime or potatoe from under the cups? Yes, and it should be your final load of choice whenever possible. It takes the same amount of work. Sponges may seem like they take less pocket space but you still have to get a hold of one in the pocket - just like anything else. They are lighter however and produce less bulging in your pockets if for some reason you are wearing tight pants. I wear looser fitting pants that allow me to get my hand in and out of my pocket easily and quickly. I can carry three limes all day long in my front pants pocket and no one really notices. If you want to look good, what's important is that your pants fit properly in the waist and in the seat - but you need the extra room up front. Pleated pants are harder to find these days as most of the casual pants makers are going with flat front trousers, but they are still available. Pleated pants have A LOT of room up front. Also, wear a shirt that buttons up and leave your shirt tails out. Many shirt makers are making shirts designed to have the shirt tails left out, the tails are shorted and even have some fabric accents in them. The shirt tails conceal any bulging of the front pockets, and you still look casual. |

Great tip on the current shirt style, Donnie. I think clothes makers will always know that many of us would like to disguise the actual size of our middles. Pleated pants do that and so does today's shirt-out fashion. We magicians can ride along... on their coattails, so to speak, taking advantage of the extra fabric they give us. Thanks.

Thank you for all the help guys, but I think I'll use my usual coat for the lemons load as I usually wear pants that are way too tight for lemons. Since I mainly perform in my college, it would be suspicious if I completely change my clothing style at the same time I start performing cups and balls. I started practicing the 4 first phases today and I'm very comfortable with all but the last part (still dropping the balls on some cup loads), and I'll head out tomorrow after work to get lemons so I can finish the classic routine.
PS : It started snowing out here anyway, so the coat is largely justified, in my opinion. |

I occasionally do chop cup behind the bar, or even table-side with 2 real baseballs in my front pants pocket. In a casual situation, I am wearing a black dress shirt that's not tucked in and they are invisible.

Of course, there is no requirement to have final loads at all

Look for the Johnny Paul cups and his routine. Only one lemon final load, uses sponge balls for routine. RNTII sells 'em.

I wear a hoody sometimes when doing chop cup. The large pocket is useful and doesn't look bulkly when loaded. Hoodies are really common at the moment.

Thanks for the proposition migwar, it doesn't really fit my jean/shirt style. Maybe when it gets even colder where I live.

I seem to have trouble when performing when it comes to the finger palm. I sometimes flash the hidden ball (as I am using aluminum foil balls so far) because of its brightness along with my lack of expertise with this move. Do you have any advice for me concerning this move ?
