I have this gawd-awful looking red and blue stovepipe hat that I crocheted that I'm going to use to collect tips...eventually.
What do you guys use? :cucumber:

Depends on the character I am doing. At the Renaissance Festival and some other street things, I was dressed as Merlin. So I used my wizard hat.
At Cav Dayes, I was dressed as a 17th century conjurer, so I used my big hat with the plume. A tambourine works well. At one time, I even had a wishing pot. Anything that will hold money will work.

I use a grey fedora. It fits my character perfectly.

I use a black fedora, or a black straw "southern" hat lined to keep any hat loads I use during my act from being seen.
As with James, I wear these because they fit my character. BroDavid

Sometimes my gray "cabbie" or "old man" (as my girlfriend calls it) hat, because I were it to stand out. If I'm doing glass, I use the frypan that I hit the glass with.
And to tie this to other threads-I think it's worth it to start pointing to the tip hat early on, condition the audience that the awful crocheted thing is where the money goes.

I use my hat for money only. Cellini, on The Art of Street Performing Part One, talks about hats and character. You may want to check that out.

Koz,
when is part2 coming? The few times I was out in California, I used a GI type jungle hat and a coffee can that said Tips on it. All Wrong! It probably turned a lot of folks off that would have tipped. My Bad. But the I never had AoSP then either.

Just because it's done, doesn't make it for sale.
We have another dvd that's being replicated right now that will come out first. koz |

Just a casual hat because I'm still amateur and don't have a theme or style for myself.

The particular style of hat is not important (unless, as in the case of Kingstardog, it contains some symbolism that people find offensive). What I've found is important is that:
1: The hat needs to be stiff enough that it will keep its form when turned brim up and 2: It needs to be deep enough that people can't really see how much money you already have, but shallow enough that they can see that others have paid you. I've used a number of hats over the years and my first few performances I had a floppy hat that gave me no end of trouble. People who can see some cash feel more inclined to pay because it confirms their feeling that you merit what they're giving you. If others have paid you, they can too. However, I have lost tips because the hat was too full and the audience members felt a twinge of "you already have a lot of money, what difference will my dollar make to you?" Within these parameters, use any kind of hat that floats your boat. |

I am now using what they call a Pork Pie hat. It looks like a Troby but with out the dents.

I prefer to go hatless, but if it's too cold (or hot) I protect my 'dome' with a Porkpie.
Sidenote: I use a seperate (collapsible) top hat to collect... I introduce it as my 'magic hat' "I know it's magic hat... when put it out to collect, everyone dissapears!" |

I use a couple of bright orange waste baskets I got for a dollar each at IKEA. They are on both sides of my performing area. This gives the crowd a better chance to donate, and it eliminates the "too full" concern.

A hat or a bucket are fine. If possible place it close to an ATM machine. -

The 100% wool top hats from the juggling suppliers are great for flourishes while you do your pitch. http://www.magicgeek.com has them.

What I use I found at the dollar store. It's a portable laundry basket. It folds to the size of a very small plate, but opens big. It's almost 3 feet high. That's the best thing I found to collect tips.
