I'll never be a busker because I haven't got the brass you guys are born with. But I know I can learn something from you. I'm amazed that you can have your hands down inside that bag, obviously up to something, but still the audience doesn't seem to "see" it... or doesn't seem to care. What's the psychology here? How do you explain that you get away with it? Thanks. It's suddenly very cold here in New England. Happy travels to warmer climes.

The buskers pouch is a strange thing. It should stand out but it dose not. I thin kit just stands out to a logical tool. Busker are always talking and chating this all adds to miss direction of what the hands are doing.
Also just having brass you can get away with a lot. I re set my fiber optics singel rope in front of every one.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Misdirection. It's not just a "move" or "sleight" that you practice in the mirror. The magic happens in their mind, not your hands.

I do a single cup routine for a living, and have slayed audiences with it all over the north american continent... I don't use a pouch, I use a servante...
However I will say this : The pouch works. .. I highly doubt that the audience believes in their minds that we "magically made fruit appear from under a cup" ... instead they are thinking "how did he get that stuff under there without me seeing"! ... It's very impressive to be that sneaky and cunning. . ... So if somebody calls you out on the pouch, it's an easy thing to say.. "OF COURSE ALL OF THIS STUFF CAME FROM THE BAG... WHAT DO YOU THINK, I'M TRYING MAKING A FASHION STATEMENT HERE!?" |

JoeJoe nailed it.
Misdirection is far more about psychology than 'move this hand to do the dirty work while drawing attention to the other hand'. That's *part* of it; but you're using everything you are: your voice, your body, your smile... you ARE smiling, aren't you? Magic is rather like painting a picture; imagine Bob Ross with a magic wand. You don't care that you see the palette in his other hand, you don't care about him washing his brushes... You care about the Happy Little Trees, and the way he makes you feel when he paints. If you're just doing 'tricks', you're not performing Magic. My philosophy is found in my sig line, and I do my best to live up to it.

Be The Plunk,
This is a wonderful read and you can find it at your local library to boot. Sleights of Mind There was also a discussion here on The Magic Café, Here. I enjoyed the book immensely from a scientific perspective. |

Look them in the eyes, and then fool them.
By this I mean that if you look people in the eyes, they will look back at your eyes, and your hands are not really moving all that much anyway, so why would they break eye contact with you? I don't look at my props (I have seen them all before, anyway) until I want the audience to look at them. The rest of the time, I am talking to them, telling them a tale of mystery and magic. There is one term that describes my performing style; engaging? I look into their eyes, capture their attention, and then carry them with me on a magical adventure. They aren't watching me, they are sharing the excitement(I am excited), the fun(I am having fun) and the adventure(every time perform, it is an adventure). The Doctor

It's natural to reach into your pouch to grab various objects you need in your act so you train the audience that what you're doing is innocent.
Once they are trained, they stop being suspicious and will pay it no mind. In fact, they won't even notice that you do it, if you've crafted your routines carefully. There are a lot of other psychological ploys. Routinely resting your hands into your pouch or near your pouch will also create comfort in their minds. Bringing things out of the pouch announced will also create a "I'm not hiding anything in here" feel. Introducing the pouch itself from a history perspective ... "in the old days, magicians would use these to hold their props/money so they wouldn't get stolen". Anything that trivializes or explains its use, whether explained or just witnessed, reduces interest.
