I am in line to possibly get my 1st show at a university. It's not one like Notre Dame or Stanford, but a local college.
I've performed for organizations but never for a college. The help I'm looking for is suggestions for pricing a 60-minute show. I know, I know . . . it depends on the area, what you think you're worth, etc. But I'm thinking that there may be a rate that is expected. Any help or suggestions? |

800-1200 for an unknown act not established in the market.
1200-1800 for a new act that is still paying his dues. 1800-3000 - They know and love you and want you back. That's just a very general guideline when dealing with colleges. Final statement - Get whatever you can, and remember, the experience from doing the show will be more valuable then what you get paid. Good Luck

Charge what you've been charging if you are in a pinch. Then work it out from there if you are promoting to more colleges. The thing is is that after the first college presuming you don't overcharge and get the gig you will have a college notch in your belt.

They typically don't participate in the circuit acts, which to me says they do not want or expect to pay circuit prices. To them $1,000 may be very high-priced. Have you inquired to their budget or other acts they've had in the past and determine the possible pricing of those acts? Have you asked about expected attendance? These may help you in deciding on your pricing. A big misconception is college dates are usually in an auditorium for hundreds of students, when in reality you may be in the corner of a common area for an audience of 22 students, some there for the performance others that are just there and would be whether there was your performance or not. The other option I'd recommend is offering them two pricing options - for example I have an $800 performance or my full show which is $1100. Offer differences in both allowing them a choice rather than it being your quote - all or nothing, take it or leave it. Do not do a door deal. |

Thanks for the input & suggestions.
I know that last year, the college had Alain Nu, Ben Saidman and Virgil. Maybe it was Paul Vigil. I haven't talked to the Activities Director yet but it seems like it's entertainment for Friday nights. I'll be honest - I'm not used to seeing or asking for those amount$$$. I REALLY appreciate your posts! |
