I thought I had a slight case of the flu. Next, I thought I had
your basic strep throat. Then, I stopped breathing fully at night
and I was wheezing at the end.

I stopped being able to sleep because of severe pain and I didn't
sleep or eat for almost three days straight. I wasn't able to
nourish my body with fluids or food to help fight off the infection.

I answered my front door to the paper boy and fainted due to lack
of energy and breath I suppose. The last thing I remember was
a neighbor waving sadly to me through the rear view mirror of
the ambulance.

Emergency room procedures had me on IV, steriods,
dilaudid (Pain med ten times stronger than morphine) and
a breathing appartus.

After chest x-rays and numerous doctors looking into my mouth
asking the same darn questions, I was finally given some intravenous
pain meds.

Next came the real fun with the hot knife and needles.

One E.N.T Specialist held the forceps to keep me from biting
the other E.N.T. guy with the PhD holding the hot knife to cut
away at the excess growth, followed by a syringe to drain the pus.

It felt like caveman medicine, for I was expecting some fancy laser
to cut away and do the work. my painkiller was a mere 2% Lydocaine
to the local area given by needled. I asked for 100% Lydocaine to no
avail before the oral surgery with the knife.

It felt more like a dental procedure than a medical one without
the cool earphones and tasty flavoured mouth numbing agents etc...

The doctor simply stated, if you bite me, this knife is going to cut
into some places that it shouldn't and you already signed the medical
waiver. Talk about reassuring eh?

This was a first for me, I was sure humbled. Some pesky fool ran off
with my newspaper to boot!

Thanks to the medical staff at U.C.S.D. in Hillcrest
I spent Thanksgiving in the E.R. watching my Dallas Cowboys whip the Oakland
Raiders, but I would rather have spent it here with you folks at the very least.
Glad to be back!

Yikes brother! Glad to have you back. Those kinds of infections can be life-threatening.

You mentioned something about your breathing stopping. That could signal sleep apnea. You may wish to discuss with your ENT guy. Do you snore heavily?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about? Smile

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

I'm scheduled for the apnea test next week.
I still have grampas old one, but yuck ya' know
what I mean? I need to get myself a new quieter one.

I had an impression of my mouth taken last week and
I surmise that I may have had an area opened up by
the dentist and the impression material may have
left some residue that infected the area...sounds
elaborate, but the timing is just too coinci-dental (no pun intended, seriously).

I sure have crossed some sort of threshold this year.
I find myself talking about the weather more often.
These bones are startin' to creak a little louder as well.

You know where to find me, hermano; and I'm here if you need an ear.
Medical woes I know only too well, as you know.

Seriously, though... don't hesitate to reach out for whatever reason.
You know what I mean.

There for you, brother. Got your back.
